a "must read" for high level sysadmins

Maybe half of the world is using Microsoft windows, administering, troubleshooting etc. Everybody know how to click(and maybe know which one) the checkbox, but less than 0.1% knows what is hapening inside, "deep in the water". How data is passed from your program too network interface, or to disk drive? This book will giva many answers, but not all. And unfortunately, as I know, maybe this book is the only one in the world about this subject(if I am wrong, please correct me). It is not an easy reading, you have to know something more about operating systems to understand it. But to cover most of the windows, it should have 2 volumes and 2000 pages. I kindly ask Mr Russinovich and Microsoft to publish more book like this.
This book is not about active directory or how to recipes. It is about kernel, I/o subsistem, memory, etc. Read the content(search inside). About windows inside, i know only one other book, Inside windows storage, but this is about only one segment of windows, and not so deep.(but also good read for "brave" sysadmins)

Comprehensive, but with some reservations with experiments.

An excellent coverage of the Windows architecture. Very strong on using tools to examine the state of a machine, from the kernel debugger to the many tools written by one of the authors. Of course, Windows being closed-source, it isn't possible to show any of the source code (or pointers thereto) that allow us to see what really happens under the hood.

I originally gave this a 5* review. Now I'm downgrading it to 4*. At the time that I read the book, my PC had a rather broken Windows 2000 installation on it, and I did not attempt any of the "experiments" that are spread throughout the book. Since then I've upgraded to Windows XP, and after that I went back to try the "experiments". I found them hard to follow, mainly because they repeatedly refer to apps that are part of either Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, or their respective Resource Kits. Some can be downloaded from the MS web site, but not all. The result was that I found that it was inpossible to run 1/4 to 1/3 of the "experiments".

Good overall, tax chapter is particularly useful

This book has good coverage of oil and gas exploration for a broad audience, but could stand to have a few more illustrations and tables to explain some of the concepts. It's got a pretty thorough step-by-step explanation of the process from exploration to drilling to (hopeful) profit. Who knows what black gold lurks under yonder plains; this book can help you find out. It's a reasonably quick read and pretty dense.

The book's coverage of the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) is particularly useful; for many energy investors the AMT is becoming more and more important. I haven't seen any other books of this type that so thoroughly cover the impact of the AMT. Did you know that the AMT can result in double-taxation? This book explains how to structure your investment so that if you make more than $100,000 (which hopefully you will) you'll be able to minimize the risk of getting hit with a huge AMT bill.

Hopefully the next edition will fix the problem with the charts; it's hard to follow some of the tax examples without having a table or a chart or something.

small book; very good

This is a small book -- only 75 page with notes, but it is very well written and tersely but competently explains the essentials of the subject. It is very readable and pitched just right--- it is intelligent and does not oversimplify but avoids being technical, too detailed or too dry. The chapters are: 1) exploration and production basics parts 1 & 2; 2) Tax advantages to the Ol & Gas investor; 3) Deal Structures; and 4) applying financial concepts. In its small size the book succeeds in painting a comprehensive overview of the subject-- it explains the mechanics of the drilling enterprise, the roles of various parties (including the landowner,operator and various active or passive investor and business partners), decision points in the drilling enterprise and allocations of expenses and profits. An excellent and intelligent introduction to the subject.

Promises more than it delivers!

A Guide To Deduction is an interesting book. Written by Hannah Rogers, the Author of The Art of Deduction and website: http://aguidetodeduction.tumbler.com.

While reading the book, I got the sense the author intended it to be a book written on how to be a detective. Each chapter has a quote from “SH,” which I assumed is Sherlock Holmes. The book is essentially a collection of deductive rules of thumb taken from her tumbler blog. These short deductive rules cover such areas as spotting things about a person at work, writing, sports, travel, home, lying and health. The author does not include any proof to back up her assertions regarding the deductions she lists. The book also has many typos and words missing in the middle of sentences. It has a simple index but provides no additional sources for further research and training.

Other books on how to deduce people, such as The Monographs, How To Instantly Size-Up Strangers Like Sherlock Holmes and The Deduction Guide are better suited for deducing people because they show you how to actually do it. Mastermind: How To Think Like Sherlock Holmes shows you how Sherlock thinks but not how to think like him and make the deductions he makes.

Another major gripe I have with A Guide To Deduction is the manipulation of the Amazon ratings. It seems that after the book first came out on December 10th, someone named “anonymous” gave it a bad one star review on December 18th. Then suddenly on December 23rd, the book received 10 five star ratings and good reviews (most which were not verified purchases). Also, on the UK amazon website, author Ben Cardall also gave the book a glowing 5 star review, which seemed suspicious to me being that both A Guide To Deduction and The Monographs are published by MX Publishing. I believe most of the reviews for this book are designed to pump up the ratings and increase the book sales.

I liked the book but it is not as amazing as some of the other reviews would have you believe. In my opinion, it promises more than it delivers.

Guide to Deduction

The first thing I noticed was this book could have used a good editor. Words are missing here and there and sometimes it is difficult to understand what the author is trying to say. Some facts are given that seem questionable. A remark is made that smallpox vaccinations were common in anyone born before 1977. But I know someone who was born in 1970 and never got such a vaccination which would have happened if it had been required. While a lot of the contents were interesting there was little fleshing out of the facts to back them up. I did enjoy reading it. It is another of the many books a diligent Sherlockian should own. I just wish the author had put more effort into it.

After being impressed by the 70-461 book and passing the exam with flying colours, I thought I would give this one a shot. Boy was I wrong. This book is beyond bad and you will need to allocate a few hours per chapter just to get through some of the mistakes in it:

- First of all, even if you follow the instructions in the exercises from chapter 3 and onwards step by step, the SSIS packages won't run. At first you may think you've made a mistake somewhere but even the solutions in the Solutions folder don't run because they are full of design flaws.
- The language used is extremely ambigious and can be interpreted in different ways. It's easy to get confused even if you have considerable experience with DWs and SSIS.
- Some of the instructions are simply wrong and the prerequisites are not stated. For example, the instructions on installing MDS in chapter 15 are missing several key points.

I could go on but it suffices to say that I am extremely disappointed in Microsoft's using this book as the official preparation for the 70-463 exam. It's a very sloppy job and if you have an alternative, please use another book.

Don't depend on the Exercises to be accurate

After spending an hour trying to debug why I was unable to get through a particular exercise in the book, I figured out that there were quite a few issues with the way Tables were built as per the book, and there were missing steps that I needed to guess at to get to work.

The information may be reasonably accurate, but it gets very frustrating trying to troubleshoot an issue only to realize you did everything as specified, but the steps were wrong.

Great DW Reference Book -- Poor Training Kit

The book is well organized and covers the huge topic of Data Warehousing in great detail. If you need a reference with hands-on examples of how to get things done--this book will get you up-to-speed and on track in no time. The practice exercises are well thought-out and provide invaluable guidance towards learning a broad and difficult subject. The nearly 800 pages are organized into 20 Chapters that cover each topic in detail. Each topic has 1 - 3 Lessons with an estimated completion time. I counted 56 Lessons with an estimated time of 45 hours. Add sample questions for each lesson and Case Studies for each Chapter and I suggest you plan on at least 60 hours to cover the book. The book covers SSIS in great detail including the new Deployment model which is essential. It offers only an introduction to Data Quality Services and Master Data Services but together with the exercises, that's enough to get through installation and a few examples. The book finishes with an intro to Data Mining and some nice examples of Advanced Data Quality with DQS Cleansing and Fuzzy Transforms. Get this book if you want/need to implement a Data Warehouse.

Now having said that, you will need to factor in the horrible state of the practice content. About 1/2 of the practice exercises don't work as presented. I have a good bit of experience in this field and managed to get through almost every exercise. But it was a struggle. I'd estimate that I spent at least 10 additional hours troubleshooting and cleaning up code. Much of the code is SSIS and quite a few packages (including the "Solution" packages)are blank! Some packages build on others as you progress through the lessons, so you might try jumping ahead to find some working code.

Now let's discuss the sample questions and included practice tests. I made sure that I understood every Chapter Lesson Question and all 186 Practice Test Questions thoroughly. Took the test and scored 628. Bummer. The Cert Exam is nothing like the practice material provided in the book. I went through the entire book a second time and purchased another practice exam (Thanks MS for the 2nd Shot) and passed ok.

If you are comfortable with this topic, can troubleshoot/debug code and/or want a great reference book--This does the job. I keep the pdf version handy for on-the-job reference. If you are new to this topic and/or looking to get your MCSA (this was the final exam for me) you might want to look elsewhere. I struggled with a rating. Clearly the authors put a lot into this book, but it was a disastrous training kit. Good Luck.

Didn't Work as a Pain Reliever but Great for Hair and Nails

After a failed back surgery, a neighbor recommended MSM for my severe back pain because I won't use narcotic pain medication. I have a lot of allergies and sensitivities, so I wanted more information before I started ingesting something that might cause an allergic reaction. I am allergic to sulfur drugs, and MSM is a sulfur derivative. But after reading the book, I learned that MSM is not the same as the sulfur prescriptions that I had an allergic reaction to. I also learned that MSM is supposed to be effective for relieving many types of ailments. I was skeptical about a product that claims it can cure or treat almost everything. But I was suffering from chronic, debilitating pain, so I started taking MSM. It's supposed to reduce inflammation which causes of pain, but it didn't help my pain. That might just be because I have herniated discs that are pinching the sciatic nerve. However, my boyfriend swears by it, and claims it relieves his various aches and pains. The one thing that I do love about MSM, though, is that it makes my hair grow really fast and more hair is growing in thicker, even in places where it used to be thinning. Also, it makes my finger nails grow really fast, and they are stronger, without the ridges I used to have in my nails. So the sulfur in the MSM has a good cosmetic effect for me, but no medicinal benefit. It did not relieve my pain. Nonetheless, I have been taking it daily because I like the effect on my hair and nails. The book is good because it tells you how to take MSM. You won't have any adverse effect if you overdose on it, but if you take too much, you'll get loose stools. You have to start with a really small amount and gradually work up to a larger dosage. Your body will let you know when you're reached the maximum amount that you can take on a daily basis. I've been taking it every day for almost four years now. I buy it at the animal feed store. One time I was out of state and tried to buy it at the same chain store where I usually shop in my state. The price was considerably higher. I asked the store manager if the price was marked wrong on the product. He told me that he would lower the price for me, and the reason they charge so much for it there is because people use it as a component to make illegal street drugs. One last thing--it tastes terrible. I heat about an eighth of a cup of water in the microwave, then stir in the MSM until it dissolves, hold my nose and chug it. After taking it every day for a while, I wasn't bothered by the taste any more. But if I stop taking it for a while and then start using it again, the taste is as bad as when I originally started using it.

I had been scheduled for surgery, but I have had surgeries for this in the past, and they did not relieve the pain. This surgery had the potential of leaving me paralyzed from the neck down, so I figured I had nothing to lose by getting the book. The information was very clear and easy to understand and offered me hope. I ordered from one of the pure MSM suppliers recommended and within days of taking a pretty high dosage, MSM became the miracle I needed. I cancelled the surgery and just keep taking the MSM. I take a much lower dose now that things are under control, but it the pain comes back, I just up the dose for a few days again. And, this was over 3 years ago. My recommendation is read the book, and try it, you have little to lose, but perhaps a lot to gain.

A VERY GOOD INSTRUCTION ON THE BENEFITS OF MSM

This is a must for anyone suffering from bad joints and osteoarthritis. As my dear friend BOB has told me, "IT WORKS"! Bob, who is age 70, was about to have both his knees replaced due to his severe pain. He had trouble just plain walking. I practically BEGGED him to give MSM a try, and he read the book. THE RESULTS: OUTSTANDING!! Bob has now been on MSM, 1,000 mg three times a day after meals. It took SIX WEEKS to begin working. He did nothing different. He has now been on MSM at this dosage for over 3 months. He told me yesterday that he has taken only two ALEVE (naproxen) in the last six weeks. HE IS ELATED! But, as I told him, you must take 3,000 mg per day in divided doses. So it takes time to work, but MSM is both safe and effective, and this book outlines all the facts and uses. It is effective for many other issues, but you need to read the book. I am a Registered Pharmacist, age 73, with 50 years of experience. Fortunately, I do not take MSM because I have no pain arthritis.

"Marder has explored the psychosexual undertow of her own intimate relationships," Siobhan McDevitt wrote in Artforum, "frequently shooting herself along with family and friends in close quarters (including pay-by-the-hour motels) and, usually, undressed. She flirts with prurience, with ideas of privacy and surveillance, eroticism and pornography, but seems more satisfied when approaching the complications of love or being in love." Beautifully illustrated, Carnal Knowledge contains 77 color reproductions of these photographs, as well as new texts from James Ellroy and Neville Wakefield, a preface by Gregory Crewdson, short stories inspired by Marder's work by A. M. Homes, James Frey and Bruce Wagner, and a Q & A for Marder devised by Philip-Lorca diCorcia. It is the first volume to collect these works and to bring Marder's work to a wider audience.
