Nobody's Home: Candid Reflections of a Nursing Home Aide (Culture and Politics of Health Care Work), by Thomas Edward Gass, Bruce C. Vlade

"At present nursing homes are designed . . . like outmoded zoos. Residents are kept in small rooms, emotionally isolated. Occasionally they are visited by family members who reach through the bars and offer them treats. Aides keep their bodies clean and presentable. . . . America invests huge amounts of money to maintain the body while leaving the person to languish, cut off from all they love."―From Nobody's Home

After caring for his mother at the end of her life, Thomas Edward Gass felt drawn to serve the elderly. He took a job as a nursing home aide but was not prepared for the reality that he found at his new place of employment, a for-profit long-term-care facility. In a book that is by turns chilling and graphic, poignant and funny, Gass describes America’s system of warehousing its oldest citizens.

Gass brings the reader into the sterile home with its flat metal roof and concrete block walls. Like an industrial park complex, it is clean, efficient, and functional. He is blunt about the institution’s goal: keep those faint hearts pumping and the life savings and Medicaid dollars rolling in. With 130 beds in the facility, the owner grosses about three million dollars annually. As a relatively well-paid aide, Gass made $6.90 an hour.

Seventeen of the twenty-six residents on Gass’s hall were incontinent, and much of his initiation to the work was learning to care for them in the most intimate ways. One of the many challenges was the limited time that he had available for each of his charges―17.3 minutes per day by his calculation. Even as he learned to ignore all but the most pressing demands of the residents, he discovered the remarkable lengths to which aides and their patients will go to relieve the constant ache of loneliness at the nursing home.

With Americans living longer than ever before, elder care is among the fastest growing occupations. This book makes clear that there is a systemic conflict between profit and extent of care. Instead of controlling costs and maximizing profits, what if long-term care focused on our basic need to lead meaningful and connected lives until our deaths? What if staff members dropped the feigned hope of forestalling the inevitable and concentrated on making their charges comfortable and respected? These and other questions raised by this powerful book will cause Americans to rethink how nursing homes are run, staffed, and financed―as well as the circumstances under which we hope to meet our end.

From Publishers Weekly
This honest and heartfelt book is a firsthand account of the reality of life in a nursing home. Gass, who spent five years in a Catholic seminary, ran a halfway house and was a teacher, returned to the U.S. after many years in Asia to care for his dying mother. That experience led him to work as a poorly paid aide in a long-term care facility in the Midwest. In a calm, intelligent and matter-of-fact style, Gass describes his often unpleasant daily routines. He cleans, feeds and dresses the patients; tries to converse with them, although they are often senile; and mostly, attempts to preserve their dignity. Perhaps Gass's most important observation is how uncomfortable everyone is around the home's residents—the staff, the relatives and the visitors. To combat that, he tries to do something to engage them: "Face to face, up close and personal, I learn to focus my full attention in flashes. One moment at a time, out comes my inner child. When I happen to touch residents softly or treat them affectionately, something may melt within and they become temporarily free of these depressing walls...." In the epilogue, Gass offers specific suggestions to reform nursing homes. He proposes having pets for the patients and letting children interact with older people more regularly. While this volume's depressing subject may be off-putting to some people, the book should be required reading for health care professionals and others in the medical field.

"Nobody's Home, a disarming memoir of meditations and straightforward observations by former nursing home aide Thomas Edward Gass, is a stark yet illustrative look into an industry based on money and death but oiled by compassion and sacrifice. . . . Gass dives in and brings to the surface immensely rich stories out of an environment full of pain and decrepitude, whether it is an intimate conversation or an accident in the bathroom. He describes his residents in an intuitive yet brutally honest manner so that the reader can truly witness the realities of aging. . . . By the end of the book, you feel compelled to meet the author or, at least, want the kind of person putting the Depends on your own aging parents to be as caring and perceptive as he."―The San Francisco Chronicle, April 11, 2004

"Nobody's Home is a humorously written, easy airplane read, more useful than other Chicken-Soup inspirational texts in that it reflects insights from an author who has directed social service programs, has a degree in psychology, and helped his mother through the process of dying. . . . This book is written for anyone who has a friend or relative in a nursing home or who will grow old and frail and require nursing home care. In sum, it is written for everyone, and from that perspective. The reader comes to understand and perhaps the fear the limitations and dependencies that sometimes accompany aging. The reader also comes to understand what it means to be a resident in a nursing home and, perhaps, to hope that all nursing home aides are as sensitive as Gass is to the fact that life is happening behind these walls. . . . The main issue, however is that the reader comes away wondering, as does the author, what elder care would look like if it were not about controlling costs but, rather, fulfilling basic needs to be meaningful and connected until the time of death."―Sheryl Zimmerman, Journal of the American Medical Association, May 10, 2006

"In an interview, Gass elaborates. 'It was just natural for me to come in close, because there is such loneliness.' . . . Nor did he fall for the idea that his charges were inert, their minds blank and their spirits benumbed. 'It may seem on the outside that they're not doing anything, or that nothing is happening,' said Gass, a social worker who rose to become director of social services at the Midwest nursing home where he worked. 'But people have had a whole lifetime to build up their character, and they don't lose that, necessarily. And so there just a whole lot of texture and depth in how they interact and how they interpret what's going on.'"―Older Americans Report 28:17, May 7, 2004

"For those of us who care about direct-care workers and the conditions of their work in long-term care, Nobody's Home: Candid Reflections of a Nursing Home Aide is a thrilling read. . . . Quietly eloquent and unfailingly honest, Gass shares his experiences and the thoughts they spurred in him, capturing the complexity of life and frontline work in what sounds like a fairly typical nursing home."―Quality Jobs/Quality Care Newsletter, April 2, 2004

"Those planning careers in nursing and allied health will find Gass's book a must-read. Readers will learn many lessons from the perspective of one of the most important caregivers in American nursing homes"The nursing home aide. . . . Gass gives the reader an honest picture of himself and what he gains from his experiences. Many important analogies and conclusions about health care and the quality of life may be drawn from this book. Anyone interested in a depiction of the universality of aging won't be disappointed. Recommended. General readers, undergraduates, faculty/researchers, and professionals/practitioners."―Choice 42:2, October 2004

"Nobody's Home is a brilliant ethnography, compelling and achingly vibrant and realistic. Thomas Edward Gass defines in human terms what it is like to be a frontline caregiver in a for-profit nursing facility, and he gives us an incredible sense of what it might be like to be a patient there. This book will surely be a tremendous resource for policymakers and for students of social work, aging, sociology, work organization, disability, and public policy."―Susan Eaton, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

"Thomas Edward Gass simply refuses to avert his gaze from frail elderly and disabled residents' humanity, and so we witness the daily indignities of institutionalized care. The nursing home residents whom Gass must hurriedly turn and spoon feed and toilet have complex lives and rich histories, and throughout this heartrending account Gass reminds us regularly that, if we live long enough, we too will likely be reduced to medical charts listing our disabilities. Gass's recounting of small gestures of tenderness and moments of compassion provide us with glimpses of what it might mean to really care for the elderly―and how our current long-term care system fails miserably at that elemental task."―Alice H. Hedt, Acting Executive Director, National Citizens' Coalition for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR)

"Thomas Edward Gass presents without embellishment a portrait of what life is like inside a modern nursing home. Nobody's Home lets the readers see the cruel tricks aging can play on residents, the frustrations of declining health, and the indignities of not being heard. This book shows us the physically tough and emotionally sapping work that aides have to do every day in a health care system and society where their work is not assigned the monetary or cultural value that it deserves. Gass shows what happens when there are simply not enough caregivers to provide that care the way we would want. This book gives us portraits of real people―residents and workers―who deserve better care and a better health care system. Members of Congress who do not have better nurse staffing at the top of their legislative agenda should read this book!"―Andrew L. Stern, International President, Service Employees International Union

"Thomas Edward Gass describes beautifully the highs and lows of caring for people with dementia. He manages to see both the humanity and the humor in everyday experiences of nursing home residents and those who care for them. His philosophy, a unique combination of realism and universalism, has much to offer all of us as we try to make sense of our lives."―Charlene Harrington, Professor of Sociology and Nursing, University of California, San Francisco

"In this profoundly moving book, Thomas Edward Gass describes his experiences as a nursing home aide. He documents the daily struggles of nursing home residents to preserve their dignity in an often uncaring institutional environment but also shows great empathy for the poorly paid aides who provide that care. I intend to assign this book in all my classes on aging."―Jill Quadagno, author of One Nation, Uninsured

"I recommend this insightful and well-written book to all those who may want to know, or need to know, more about daily life in a nursing home from the perspective of the residents and the nurses' aides who provide their basic care. Although Thomas Edward Gass details the realities of toileting, feeding, and bathing often disoriented residents, he also discovers their more fundamental need for meaningful human connection and shows that this need is most often met, if it is met, by overworked and exhausted nurses' aides like himself."―Chuck Grassley, U.S. Senator, Chairman of the Committee on Finance and former Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging

From a nursing aide perspective
By patricia_grace
From an actual nursing aide! The author has now moved on, but he writes about his experience working as a nursing assistant (sometimes called CNAs - certified nursing assistants), in an elder care nursing home. CNA's are the backbone of a nursing home. All the unpleasant work that docs don't do, and now that nurses (RNs, LPNs) don't do are passed on to the CNA. Feeding, showering, toileting, dressing, and basically dealing with all manner of bodily fluids from adults who are no longer able to live on their own.

This book is a real look at the hard facts of both living and working in a nursing home.

Although he was very clear about the hard work and unpleasantness of the job, the book still managed to have a good amount of humor and touching moments. Found myself smiling several times.

After reading, you should have more compassion for both workers and residents of nursing facilities. I could see this book being required reading in some college classes.

It helped me learn to take care of a loved one at home
By Amazon Customer
I read this book at the point where we moved my mother-in-law from assisted living and into our home under hospice care. I then became her full time at-home CNA.

I always appreciated the CNA's who are the first line care givers. I appreciated them even more after reading Nobody's Home, and especially when I had to perform their role at home. I shared the book with several aides who also seemed to enjoy it and confirmed that it captured and represented aspects of their work and experiences.

Most importantly, this book gave me the knowledge and courage to perform the mundane caring and hygiene tasks that my mother-in-law required. Gass's accounts of his own experiences helped me get passed these issues, and provide the care my mother-in-law needed and deserved. In effect, Nobody's Home served as an operating manual for me as I learned how to be an aide. It helped me get through an extra-ordinarily difficult time.

If you have a loved one in assisted living, a nursing home, in home care, or on hospice, consider reading this book.

A candid and compassionate story
By M. Flesner
At 189 pages, the book does a wonderful job of telling the story of a CNA who goes to work in a nursing home in the Midwest after the death of his mohter. He wants to do meaningful work that would gain depth to his character. He is not the typical aide, having spent years working and learning in a variety of areas. His past experiences and education allow him to write about the job, the nursing home, his colleagues and the residents with beautiful insight and compassion. These words in his Epilogue have stuck with me. "Few of us are prepared for what happens. First we grow up and get stronger by the day. Then one day the process reverses. At first we deny and resist, but evenutally we all surrender."

Gass has some wonderful insights for people working in the LTC industry and for those of us who will one day be admitted.

The Streets of Town, by John Gardner

September, 1940.

Chaos and mistrust reign as the terrifying Blitz begins.

Detective Sergeant Suzie Mountford is back with a brand new case in the London suburb of Camford.

After a local restaurant owner, Carlo Falconetti, has his fingers broken mysteriously and a local punter, Buller Belcher, is found dead, supposedly murdered by a group of drunk military men, WDS Suzie Mountford is assigned the case.

But something doesn’t add up and Mountford’s attention is turned to the Balvak twins, Connie and Conrad, who appear more and more suspicious and lethal than ever.

Camford’s bars and clubs are run by the notorious gangster twins and their criminal activities have given them a dangerous reputation.

Their notable cronies are just as deadly; Shady Porky Pine, Matthew 'Newcastle' Brown and the Trinity Building Co. trio , Dave, Dick and Derek, are causing a storm.

The Balvak’s cut throat justice and mob rules apply to even their closest companions.

When they discover that their right hand man and accountant Little Nell is stealing money from them, his life is in serious danger…

Mountford must navigate her way through a web of corruption and misleading evidence while protecting and hiding a witness of the murder, a terrified waitress named Sybil.

With the help of her lover Tommy Livermore, Suzie must uncover the truth and bring the Balvak twins to justice.

But is Tommy and Suzie’s relationship put in jeopardy when Tommy visits the beautiful Molly Abelard?

How will Suzie cope with the office politics in the police department and complications in her love life?

And who is the mysterious Ghoul that only appears late at night to retrieve the dead from the wreckage?

What connection does this spirit have to the case? Will his strange appearances aid Suzie before she runs out of time...?

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s, John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including ‘Maestro’, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including ‘Licence Renewed’ and ‘Icebreaker’. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

From Publishers Weekly
Fine atmospherics partly redeem a shaky plot in Gardner's second entry in his Suzie Mountford series (after 2002's Bottled Spider), set in WWII London. Det. Sergeant Mountford seeks to advance her career by tackling gangsters who have supplemented their usual rackets with a variety of black market swindles aimed at dulling the pain of government-mandated rationing. In order to nail a corrupt superior she suspects of working hand in glove with the most vicious and powerful villains-twins who seem to foreshadow the historic brothers Kray-she fakes a breakup with her aristocratic lover to arrange a reassignment to Soho. Once in position, she diligently enlists a network of informants to probe for any chinks in the twins' armor and plots to seize any opportunity to find a witness willing to testify to their brutalities. In the background, a necrophiliac serial killer, the Ghoul, preys on victims of the intermittent German bombing runs. Unfortunately, the Ghoul flies so far below the radar that neither Mountford or any of her colleagues in the force are aware that he is even at work until the story's end, where several key strands of the book unravel. Most notably, the street-smart and independent Mountford becomes a passive victim not once but twice, in ways that seem only gratuitous. These flaws mar a decent police thriller that makes little pretense to having any mystery elements, but that nicely evokes wartime London and the seamy underworld that thrived amid patriotic sacrifice.

From Booklist
Gardner, author of more than 40 novels, including the continuation of Ian Fleming's James Bond series, offers up another cunningly plotted mystery featuring London policewoman Suzie Mountford. Set in 1941, the tale perfectly captures the mood of post-Blitz London: strict rationing, bombed-out homes, and thousands of families torn apart by the war. But it's crime-ridden, Mob-run Soho on which Gardner focuses. WDS Suzie Mountford is sent undercover by Scotland Yard detective Tommy Livermore, also Suzie's lover, to find the link between the Balvak Twins, who control Soho's brothels and nightclubs, and corrupt police inspector Tony "Big Toe" Harvey. Gardner conjures up an inventive plot, intriguing characters, and a spunky heroine in this suspenseful foray into London's postwar underworld. An enthusiastic thumbs-up for this fine combination of atmosphere and suspense. Emily Melton

This book should be better known.
By Dr. Fred R. Eichelman
I am amazed and honored to be the first to review "The Streets of Town" by John Gardner for Amazon. I'm amazed as this series of books, that began with "Bottled Spider", should have been at the top of any list of mysteries and thrillers. I feel honored as I consider John Gardner the very top in his field.

"The Streets of Town" follows the further adventures of Scotland Yard's WDS Suzie Mountford. Again the author gives us beautifully detailed plotting with sub plots galore. There are more surprises than a Hitchcock film and the characterizations are supreme. In this adventure we have a unique picture of the London underworld with the back drop of World War Two in 1941. The description and the dialogue of criminal characters is more colorful than a Damon Runyan tale and definitely more grim and deadly. Suzie has to overcome the prejudice against women who took the place of men as police officers during the war and therefore has to out Sherlock other detectives using her own unique abilities.

If this is your first look at the series you will want to read "Bottled Spider" and the two (three before long) that follow this one. If you have never read any books by John Gardner, then now is the time to start as you have missed a great deal.

I will admit that the Suzie Mountford books may appear at first glance as being geared to an English readership, something that may be new to some American readers. However, that is one of the things that makes this series so distinctive and you will find that the vernacular, some of the the terms, can be sorted out when you consider the whole text and you use your imgaination. John Gardner wants us to feel the texture of the times in London, to understand what life was like in this city at this particular period of history.

Exceptionall book
By Srdjan Pesic
The late John Gardner, a writer of long and distinguished career, finished his exceptionall opus with the series of 5 novels featuring Det. Sgt Suzie Mountford, set in wartime London.
The first two books that I've read are real gems. The tantalizing atmosphere of foggy, wounded London, the flesh and blood characters that almost leap at us from the pages, the wicked sense of humor-it is all perfect. Mr. Gardner gives a whole new spin on wartime London. It wasn't just the amazing courage and sacrifice of the British people. There was a lot of money to be made, gangsters, hookers, booze and if you had the dough you could buy anything you dreamt of. That slimy, violent London and its heros and villains, make you grieve when the book is finished. I have three more books left, and I will relish them slowly and sparingly.

Slob, by Ellen Potter

Outrageously funny and smart, this story of an obese boy who takes on his bullies is as heartwarming as it is clever.

Twelve-year-old Owen Birnbaum is the fattest kid in school. But he's also a genius who invents cool contraptions, like a TV that shows the past. Something happened two years ago that he needs to see. But genius or not, there is much Owen can't outthink. Like his gym coach, who's on a mission to humiliate him. Or the way his Oreos keep disappearing from his lunch. He's sure that if he can only get the TV to work, things will start to make sense. But it will take a revelation for Owen, not science, to see the answers are not in the past, but the present. That no matter how large he is on the outside, he doesn't have to feel small on the inside.

With her trademark humor, Ellen Potter has created a larger-than-life character and story whose weight is immense when measured in heart.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6-8–Owen is the fattest–and smartest–seventh grader in his New York City school. When he's not ducking the school bully or trying to survive the world's most sadistic P.E. teacher, he invents things. Currently Owen has two projects–a TV that will show events in the past and a trap to catch the thief who keeps stealing the Oreos from his lunchbox. There's a lot of middle school banter and adolescent dialogue. However, what begins as a lighthearted adventure gradually takes on a darker tone. Owen calls his invention Nemesis and insists that it needs to reach exactly two years back. As the story evolves, readers learn that there are places in town where he feels distinctly uncomfortable, and that he treasures a note that says only SLOB. Step by step, Owen reveals the tragedy behind his concerns. Two years earlier, he was hiding in the basement of the family store, listening as his parents were killed by an intruder. Adopted by the 911 operator who took his call after the murders, he dreams of identifying the perpetrator. Although Nemesis fails to solve the crime, Owen is finally able to find closure, with help from his sister, their friends, and, surprisingly, from the dreaded bully himself. A sensitive, touching, and sometimes heartbreakingly funny picture of middle school life.–Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

Review
Potter has written a pitch-perfect novel of the miseries of middle-school. Filled with sarcasm and lots of humor, the story is filled with intriguing characters, believable and unique. --Kids Lit Blog

"An intriguingly offbeat mystery concerning the theft of cookies from a boy's lunch, at turns humorous, suspenseful and poignant. Intelligent Owen is the fattest kid in his middle school, having packed on the pounds after a major upheaval in his life caused him to begin turning to food as a source of comfort. His younger sister, who has joined up with a group at school called Girls Who Are Boys (GWAB) and taken to insisting that others call her Jeremy, coped by growing tougher. Owen, on the other hand, has become an object of ridicule due to his weight. While the Oreo heist provides the main premise for Owen to engage with other kids at school, there are a number of secondary mysteries crafted alongside it, each of them raising unexpected questions that are neatly wrapped up by the novel's end. While some readers may balk at some of its more convenient coincidences, fans of Jerry Spinelli and others of his ilk may especially enjoy it and will be held rapt." --Kirkus

"A sensitive, touching, and sometimes heartbreakingly funny picture of middle school life." --School Library Journal, starred review

Appropriate for ages 11-13, this book has a winning cover and its humor will have readers sharing it with friends. A must-have for middle school libraries everywhere."

Funny Yet Poignant MG Novel
By cheryl c malandrinos
Both funny and poignant, I never knew I could enjoy a middle-grade novel as much as I did "SLOB" by Ellen Potter.

Owen Birnbaum is fat. But he wasn't always that way. Something bad happened and now he's the fattest kid at school, spending his days being teased endlessly by his classmates, afraid that the new school psycho who carries a switchblade in his sock is out to get him, tortured by his cruel gym teacher, and dealing with his sister who has decided she wants to dress and look like a boy and be called Jeremy.

Life isn't all bad though. Owen is a genius and he can invent cool stuff, like a TV that shows the past--a past that is scary, but one that can answer the questions burning inside his head...if only he can get it to work.

When the Oreos from Owen's lunch keep disappearing, he's sure the school psycho is the culprit. Owen puts together a plan--along with a neat new thief catching device--to help capture the Oreo snatcher. What he doesn't consider, however, is that science might not hold all the answers.

Every middle-grade reader will find something to enjoy in "SLOB". More than a story about an overweight kid who is teased profusely, "SLOB" is the story of one boy's quest to uncover the truth about the tragic event that altered his life forever.

Speaking directly to the reader, Owen shares his struggles at school--which stink, but he's not overly upset about because he's smarter than all those guys anyway, his sister's involvement in GWAB (Girls Who Are Boys), the torture he endures at the hands of his gym teacher Mr. Wooly, and how things change for him once the psycho comes to school--not only is Mason Ragg a psycho, he's a smart psycho.

Opening with the line, "My name is Owen Birnbaum, and I'm probably fatter than you are.", Owen does not suffer from low self-esteem, as one might imagine. His being fatter than you is "pure statistics". Immediately, the reader is drawn in by Owen, and Owen is so entertaining and engaging that the reader will never want to stop learning more about him until the last page of the book. But then again, if the reader is anything like me, she's hoping for a sequel.

The contraptions Owen invents are amazing, and Owen describes them to you in detail and shares how they work. I can see a lot of middle-grade boys trying to recreate or improve upon Owen's inventions after reading "SLOB".

Potter has done such an excellent job of making Owen real for her audience that you'll soon forget that an adult woman wrote this book. And if parents are cool enough to pick up a copy of "SLOB" or to sneak their child's copy when he/she is off at school, they will be treated to references to The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Charlie's Angels and other hit shows from their youth. Of course, in Owen's world they are Retro TV, but we adults like to call them classics. I have to admit Owen's mother's name--which is Zelda--reminds me of The Legend of Zelda game my son played on his original Nintendo video game system.

I highly recommend "SLOB" by Ellen Potter. Funny and offbeat, yet equally poignant, "SLOB" is destined to add more awards to this talented author's portfolio.

Great Middle-Grade Book
By Julie Peterson
SLOB is a little different than the OLIVIA KIDNEY books because the main character and narrator is a 12 year-old boy. The book starts with Owen telling you that he's not the typical twelve-year-old boy because he is "57 percent fatter than the national average for a twelve-year-old boy." From the first paragraph, I just knew I was going to fall in love with Owen. He is a wonderful, kind, insecure kid who just happens to be a genius (1 point shy as he reminds the reader.) He is definitely a memorable character that many young kids will relate to, and I absolutely adored him and can't stop thinking about what a fantastic person he was.

It quickly becomes clear that Owen and his sister Jeremy (she has changed her name to a boy's name) have been through a lot; however, the reader is gradually given hints that something tragic happened in their past. I had some ideas, but I have to admit that I was shocked with the secret. I thought Ms. Potter did an amazing job of telling this story and keeping the reader's attention.

SLOB does deal with some very serious issues, and my heart definitely went out to Owen and Jeremy; however, I have to say that I found this book to be hilarious! There was so much humor woven into this story, especially Owen's insights into life, that I don't consider it a "sad" read. The ending is definitely upbeat and the reader is left with some terrific messages. I think kids will feel bad for Owen, but I think they will absolutely love the mystery, suspense and humor in this novel. I know I couldn't put it down!

There are a lot of themes in the book that are relevant for kids in today's society including childhood weight issues, violence, lack of self-esteem, bullying, etc. And I think it would make a fabulous discussion book either in school or even in a mother/daughter (parent/child) book club. I believe that reading SLOB and discussing the issues in it might just open the lines of communication for parents and children alike. And, I know that Owen's battle and his resilience will strike a chord with many young readers and give them the confidence they need to handle some of the challenges in their lives.

When I finished this novel, I tweeted Ms. Potter telling her how wonderful it is. She mentioned that she has a special connection to SLOB because it is loosely based on the relationship between her brother and her. That made the book even more special in my eyes, especially the scenes with Jeremy. I can't wait for my daughter to read it!!!

Surprisingly Good
By Colleen Britton Casanova
I judged this book for an award at a local junior high, and found it surprisingly good. The narrator, Owen, has a very believable voice, and while some of the book was a bit far-fetched, I found it to be an overall enjoyable read. The plot - a mystery, which begins with missing Oreo cookies - is quite good, and ties together excellently.

I would give the book five stars, except that I felt like there was a slight lack of depth. I realize that it's a children's/young adult book, but I felt the author could've delved a little deeper, and come out with a slightly more mature book. All in all, however, I would recommend this book to junior high kids, and maybe even lower level ninth graders. The only potential problems I see are the references to swearing and violence, but these are both so minimal, that I can't really see anyone complaining.

A Memorable Favorite!
By Susan M. Hruska
When my kids were 5 & 6 years old, I discovered this book at the local library. It caught my eye because it was a (1985) Caldecott Medal Honor Book, and was displayed w/lots of other Caldecott Medal winners. We usually read 30-60 minutes before bedtime and this book was a family favorite; we checked it out from the library again and again. The illustrations are vivid and memorable. Of course, it helped to read the book with a creepy/scary voice for the witch's character. The kids enjoyed the illustrations tremendously, often looking at the pictures on their own. Recently, I bought a copy of this book and gave it to my son, a recent new father. What a big hit! He remembered this book well, even though it's been 18 years since we read it!

Beautiful!
By kn_s
As a 5 and 6 year old, I recall reading this stark version of the fairy-tale. The illustrations here are simply beautiful! I remember talking to my mom about the issues in this tale -- famine and starvation, abandonment, cannibalism, supporting, being supported by your sibling, and returning/reunited to your family after being through everything.
My mom helped me understand the mom's behaviour in this story, and I hope I can do that for my son some day. Like all fairy tales, this simply looks at some of the worst that could happen, and lets you see a way out. I read it without these gorgeous illustrations too. You can't disney all of life, though I admit, I'm a sentimental soft-hearted person who cries when the cats get rained on when I'm watching the Aristocats :-) Enjoy, and think too ...

a differing opinion ...
By A Customer
Although I love Zelinsky's work I didn't purchase this title because Hansel and Gretel was always my least favorite fairy tale. But I find it almost beyond belief that people are complaining about it's subject matter. What versions are these people reading? These tales were originally written for adults and then rewritten for children. It's definitely NOT a tale for very young children and never was. It should be ok, though, for the slightly older ones who like to be scared a bit. I always avoided it because of the child abuse/abandonment and cannibalism aspects. But I never realized people thought it was about anything else. Maybe I'm just used to the Grimm's versions because I collect fairy tale books but if you're going to make this a non-violent tale, you'd have to pretty much rewrite the whole fairy tale. I have to give this book high marks for staying true to the original tale and for the wonderful artwork. If people don't know what Hansel and Gretel is about by now they will after reading these reviews, at least. Puzzling.

Sweet Romance
By sjoyce
Even though I received this as an ARC for an honest review, I would have gladly paid for this book. I read it in one sitting. It was like an extremely light dessert. Such a sweet romance almost seemed too good to be true. The sex wasn't over the top but added to the story. Alex and Paris, were made for each other. It did seem as if his parents gave in too quickly but perhaps they knew that Alex would not give in. Whitney and her parents were too much. I wouldn't mind reading a sequel to this book. If you're into romance books, this is one for you.

A Wonderful Love Story!
By Barbara J Walker
I enjoyed this book so much! I laughed and then I cried and then I got mad and then I laughed and cried again! My son and granddaughter said ' That must be one Good book you're reading!' I could only nod my head and Smile. Thank you Miami for bringing Alex Andre and Paris into my life. I fell in love with the entire Royal Family and truly appreciated the way that everyone treated Paris when she arrived in Dalvana. This story will forever be one of my favorites! Now I'm going to wait for Joseph and Mathias' love stories! (Just a hint)

Paris in Paris doing Parisian things
By V. Rena
I received this book as an ARC in return for my honest review. This is not your ordinary Cinderella story. It's Cinderella and Prince Charming to the 10th power. I love how Paris and Alex met, and they seemed to have chemistry from the start. The relationship seemed a little rushed, but it worked for them. Not that I would know, but as they say...when you know you know. I love the simplicity in their romance like walking along the river side, the garden, the cafe and bakeries, etc. They took the time to get to know each other during these outing. I hate that Alex didn't truthfully tell her who he was from the beginning, but I can understand his reasons for discreet and privacy. Sometimes, you just want "me time" and not stress about your surrounding. Paris gave Alex the chance to act his age and to indulge in some of the activities his brothers were able to get away with. For once in his life and her life, they were not thinking with their heads but with their hearts. In the end, true love wins out every time. I loved how his royal family embraced Paris immediately, and I'm glad that her family attended her wedding. I'm also proud that she will still pursue her career despite her new found status. I would have done more to Whitney then just humiliate her in public. She deserved a good ole arse whooping. Nevertheless, she's someone else's problem. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Life Changing
By Quintana Galvan
This book is just the kick in the pants I needed to get a plan in action for to start my personal business. I've also applied the same method to my weight loss goals and it really helps keep me on track. Some people might say it's something that we already know, but the way everything is presented in Steve's book it makes sense and works for me.

I suggest giving it a read only if you're ready to take that next step of achieving something you've wanted your whole life.

Typical, just not enough, Sorry!
By Steve A. Balsamo
Look the book is okay but nothing special, there are no new lessons here. Steve was a great baseball player who overcame his own demons which in itself is a decent story. But as a self help, motivational book it lacked substance and depth for me. Its also a bit pricy for a paperback that's 125 pages and short on content. I'd have to say it was just Okay...
