a wonderful compilation of IB tips you won't even find online

i can't believe it's taken this long for somebody to put out something like this. as someone who has been involved with the IB for over 20 years, this is exactly the kind of resource that has been missing for clueless students all over the world. each chapter is helpful, and the advice is more or less fool-proof. I really think every single IB student should read this book three times. Once before the IB, once during summer of 1st year, and then a final read right before exams.

my only two complaints are i) i think the one chapter on CAS is either outdated or specific to some schools and ii) the book may be seen as 'overpriced' by some (although you pay 80+ usd for an IB bio textbook and this is wayyy more beneficial to your overall score).

A great help for the struggling students

Bought this after seeing IB kids talking about it on Instagram. It’s actually a really great help-book to anyone struggling in the program. The authors original chapters are great, and the submitted chapters vary in helpfulness but overall there is a bunch of tips that I never would have thought of.

If you are already predicted 42+ points, chances are you know what you are doing, and reading this book, although quick, will do little to improve your score. However, if you are struggling to get a pass mark, or are an average student, the advice will definitely get you 6 or more extra points, whether the bonus ones, or in individual subjects (especially core ones).

I strongly believe the IB is a superior curriculum to other alternatives, and will be the benchmark in the near future. However, not all schools have amazing teachers who specifically know the ins and outs of the program and how to succeed in it. This book solves these problems!

Only complaint is that delivery took longer than promised, hopefully Amazon stocks a few copies when it sees demand growing. Also, a cheaper electronic version would be a great addition.

As an IB teacher, it is great to have this sort of concise and accurate handbook (without all of the unnecessary obfuscating IB language) to guide students with very practical advice. This guidebook removes much of the intimidation inherent in the IB programme and gives students increased confidence by getting right to the main points and by speaking to students in their own language.

Parody of a name but unique story

I admit, I thought this was a silly parody of Captain America at first, but I was pleasantly wrong.

In this story, Captain China, formerly known as Liberator and ranked Major, is brought from cryogenic sleep to fight China's enemies or at least that's what he would prefer whereas his superiors see him more as a PR stunt to show China's strength. The name initially gives a sense of rip-off, but it's explained as more of a calculated PR move by the Chinese leadership. Captain China of course does mirror some aspects of Captain America in the movie winter soldier though in the sense that the protagonist comes from a different time and is facing a bit of a culture shock (but hey this came from the year 2012 whereas the winter soldier came from 2014 so no rip off here). It's worth noting that one of the major characters in this story worked in the wrestling industry and now works for Captain China as his PR manager of sorts.

That said, Captain China has all the underpinnings of a America-style superhero, from the macho attitudes, the stoic resolve, the mystery shrouded around his past, and the disregard for authority figures. He may be held under a tight leash, but he still defies authority to save lives, kick butt and take name in this first volume. Where he does separate from the traditional American superhero however is his ruthlessness in regards to villains. Hell, he shot and killed a thief during his introduction who turns out to be hired secretly by the PR manager to cause a commotion in front of Captain China and the press. His commander is shocked at how trigger happy Captain China is.

At the Author's notes, the Author notes that he got the idea originally as a joke and parody, but it evolved to something more when he visited China in 2009 and fleshed out the idea. China is currently in the midst of a strange hybrid of communist ideals and market capitalism. This story beautifully displays the various sides of China at once with the old ideals Captain China holds, the PR maverick managing Captain China's brand, and the military commander in charge of Captain China. A great read, will definitely recommend.

A Fun Read and a Neat Concept

I gotta admit right off the bat, wasn't expecting much from this. The English preview articles made it sound like it was a big propaganda comic. After having read the first two volumes, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and happy to be proven wrong. Captain China has been awoken in modern day China, to help combat new threats to it's safety in a world of superpowered individuals/high-tech criminals/etc. There's just one catch, Captain China was born and raised during Mao's China, and is a staunch Communist. Now he finds himself in a China he hardly recognizes, in a world stage that is vastly different from the one he remembers. He was given these abilities to fight the Capitalist powers, and yet his first real assignment is to protect the US President as he visits, something unheard of back in the days of 'Cultural Revolutions'. And the cultural/generational clashes only keep piling up. The P.R. stunt with a (unbeknownst to the Captain) staged robbery that backfires is a great example of this.

So it's very interesting to see how this is playing out. He's as "A Man From Out Of Time" as Captain America, and like Cap is having to cope with this massive change in his life, and adjust to this new world. So far it's been very exciting to read, and has some really great moments, like when (in issue 2) the Captain finds his image has been made into a toy to be marketed.

Just wish Excel Comics would release new English language issues.

So I highly recommend it.

Not your usual hero comic!

After reading this book, I have come to the conclusion that this book contains everything that the industry lacks these days: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. You can read it and be amused by it. You can read it and be provoked by it. You can read it and be given cause to stop and think. But you will NOT read it and feel ripped off by it. You can tell a lot of thought went into this book, and in the 41 pages a LOT of ground is covered, but not too much that you're left scratching your head. The artwork is excellent. The hi-rez images on the Kindle Fire look brilliant. The writing isn't cheesy. This is a fun book worth reading. Support the little guys!

We have been buying this price guide since it's inception but the quality and content has been dropping the last few years. I suppose they are trying to keep the price down, but they are omitting and reducing too much. I would say though, until someone comes up with something more complete, it's the one to buy.

About the Author
Frank Shapiro, MA in History from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, is a former high school history teacher of European and Jewish history, and previously held the post of assistant researcher at the Museum of the Diaspora, Tel Aviv. Frank Shapiro was commissioned by the Council of Zambian Jewry to research and write the history of Northern Rhodesian/Zambian Jewry leading to the publication of Zion in Africa in 1999. His second book, Haven in Africa, revealing new and undisclosed facts on the Holocaust, was published in 2002. He lectures frequently on his subjects and has contributed diverse historical articles in newspapers and journals. Born in London, he lives with his wife and family in Israel.

Preface: A Haven in Africa

Late October, 1989, is the hottest and muggiest time of year in Zambia.

Only two out of five ceiling fans worked in the dusty decrepit shed that served as the Zambian National Archives. I had difficulty in concentrating. Large biting flies attacked my perspiring face and exposed arms. Cautious lest perspiration trickle onto the precious archived documents, I juggled papers from place to place while I tried to examine them. At the time I had been commissioned by the Council of Zambian Jewry to research and write the history of the Jews of Northern Rhodesia, which was to become Zambia. Among the papers, were the occasional references to the immigration of European Jews during the 1930s. Each perusal intrigued me more and more. However, I hadn’t yet quite pinpointed the core of my inquisitiveness.

The historical record to date regarding the Jewish predicament in Germany and Austria did not involve the question whether or not to emigrate; after all this had become official Nazi policy, but rather: where on this planet could a fleeing Jewish refugee find a country of entry? Throughout the world a politically brutal and inhumane picture had emerged: the free western countries were swiftly closing their gates to any form of mass Jewish immigration. The Evian Conference on refugees, which had convened in July 1938 to create a viable program, petered out in a cloud of rhetoric. Here and there, grudging allocations were reluctantly granted, but in view of the immense dimensions of the persecuted population, no large tracts of land were made available for settlement. Palestine, which was the natural and legitimate solution - as defined under international law in the terms of the mandate granted to Britain by the League of Nations - was now put strictly out of bounds. When war broke out in September 1939, it was too late to seek a negotiated solution for these millions of people. By then the Jews were well and truly locked within the graveyard of Europe. Their fate had now been sealed.

In the light of this knowledge I now pondered my new historical findings. It suddenly dawned on me that unlike the restricted immigration rulings throughout the free democratic western world during the 1930s, here in Northern Rhodesia, deep within central southern Africa, Jews had been permitted entry. I now felt aware that I had stumbled across some significantly new information with far-reaching intonations lost or buried in time.

My historical quest led me across a number of countries and continents. At the U.K. Public Archives in London the information I sought lay hidden in hither-to unopened classified government files - sealed for more than fifty years. Why were these particular files so confidential that their contents were barred from prying researchers even till now? Imbued with excitement and trepidation, I opened the Foreign Office and Colonial Office files on Jewish emigration and Northern Rhodesia. I was the first person to untie those ribbons since they had been archived away. My initial findings, discovered in Zambia became rigorously confirmed from hour to hour. As I browsed through handwritten memos, letters and official typed documents, Jewish emigration to Northern Rhodesia was fast evolving into a very provocative subject.

It took some years before I had in my possession a wealth of information derived from research using accepted historical tools and methodology. For example: recorded oral and written evidence from such distinguished personalities as Sir Roy Welensky, former Prime Minister of Northern Rhodesia, through to the individual narratives of Jewish refugees; archival primary sources, official government and civil service documents, as well as excerpts from books, journals, diaries and newspapers. I endeavored to leave no stone unturned. I visited official and lesser-known archives such as those of the Rothschild family in the City of London.

Like a jigsaw all the pieces eventually fell into place. The mosaic of evidence confirms that vast numbers of Jewish refugees could have been saved and allowed to settle in Northern Rhodesia. How this potentially unique country allowed a haven of safety to exist on the one hand, and not to have fulfilled its saving potential on the other, is the core theme of this book.

what could, and should have happend

Frank Shapiro tells the compelling story, of one tragic aspect of the holocaust. Many more Jews could have been saved-if only... Many people worked very hard toward that end, but again, and again obstacles were thrown into its path. It is a valuable lesson, about a chapter in history, which needs to be told, in order that it should never again happen. The book is an easy read, but with invaluable footnotes for the scholar.

About the Author

Grant Pooke lectures in the History & Philosophy of Art at the University of Kent. He is co-author of Teach Yourself Art History (2003) and the author of Francis Klingender 1907–1955: An Iconographer Out of Time (2007).

Exceptional and far from basic

Grant Pooke (History and Philosophy of Art at Kent University) and Diana Newall (previously an authoring consultant for Open University Teach&Learn Project) have put together a concise and intellectually subtle survey of major thinkers and movements. The book starts off on the thin side, expounding in a note format the more basic methodologies that have populated the critical landscape, but it soon proceeds to fashion a veritable journey through ideas and thinkers which have mystified the lot of writers out there who devote themselves to a commercial, democratic project such as this. In other words when the authors discuss semiotics and poststructuralism, post-marxism, T.J. Clark, or representations of gender, they assume the role of a professional teacher that seeks to explain while demanding of himself or herself to impart understanding to its audience. When it is impossible to do justice to a thinker or an artist (such as Adorno or Gerhadt Richter) they give just enough inofrmation to illustrate the relevance they had on Art History, and do so with such penetrating insights as to leave any perplexing questions in its proper perspective and within a responsible vantage point. When they can, and this happens much too often given the space they operate within, they offer exceptional readings that in a nutshell give the full panoply of the impact and wisdom of such art critics as T.J. Clark, Hal Foster, Linda Nochlin, Chasseguet-Smirgel, Baudrillard, Mulvey, Danto and Lyotard (to be honest they leave something to be desired in repsects to the October school of Art critics, but they do incorporate them just enough). They dabble just fine into Charles Sanders Pierce and Lacan - a sucess worth thebook on its own accord.In essence this is an invaluable compendium of theorists and ideas that reads fluidly and may well substitute for thousands of dollars spent on a University Course. And they give a very instructive reading of many artists (such as Smithson, Jago Max Williams, Jacques-Louis David, Judy Chicago, Eduard Manet, Duchamps, Malevich, George Dannatt, Kapoor, Koons amongst others). One should receive credits for reading the book. Yes it is that good. If you haven't the time to devote years to reading all the thinkers and movements they touchupon, do pick this book up and devote a week to it. It will soon lay by your bedside and increase your understanding of the topic exponentially. And this comes from someone who has devoted years to reading most all the critics and artists they discuss. An excellent introduction and an even better survey that gives direction and disseminates possible readings.

Good intro

This book is my first exposure to modern art histories. I am not an academic nor enrolled student; just a curious layperson. After reading this, I am more than just curious, I thirst for more.

The book throws out a lot of names and complicated ideas. It scratches the surface enough to give the flavor of the contours of thought in this complex discipline and enough to leave me wanting more. Fortunately, each chapter contains a descriptive further reading section—this book is going to sell books by other authors.

This book will remain my overall bibliography and starting guide for years to come as I delve further into art history, or rather, art histories.

The Basics offers exactly what it claims to offer--a quick and dirty breakdown of the theories of art history at their most basic. It is a fantastic tool and starting point (STARTING point, it does require some work on the part of the reader when it comes to fleshing out some of the content). Perfect for students, I loved it.

Dan Kennedy's best work yet

I receive this book on Thursday, started reading on Friday and finished it Sunday afternoon; I couldn't put it down. I've read most of Dan's books and think this is one of, if not THE best one he's done. Matt Zagula's real world examples and strategies help tremendously. I have six pages of Action Item notes. I got more out of this book than I did the $10,000 Trust Based Marketing Workshop of Dan & Matt's I attended, and that was very good. This book is GREAT!

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone where increased trust will help you grow your businesses successfully (that's EVERYONE).

Trust for Dan Kennedy and Matt Zagula? Zero.

Let's be clear: this is not a book about trust-based marketing. It is influence marketing to create a semblance of trust via techniques anyone learns in Social Psychology 101. A temporary trance you snap out of; certainly not the kind of trust that means clients are with you for the long haul. And why would Kennedy and Zagula want them to be? They are totally contemptuous of them. Furthermore, this is a badly written book with no substance, just like the "sales letters put into book format" these guys tell us we should be writing.

What's interesting here are all the positive reviews on Amazon. Anyone with half a brain who read this book would have realised that most, if not all, of the glowing reviews here have been solicited or bought. And if you argue with me on this, you would actually be arguing with the principles of the book, because that is EXACTLY the kind of thing that Kennedy and Zagula tell us to do. Can't have it both ways, guys.

So. Trust for Dan Kennedy and Matt Zagula? Zero.

Anyone serious about this (and you should be serious because this kind of influence marketing is going the way of the dinosaurs) should be reading and listening to Glenn Urban, the Edelman report, Stephen Covey, and people of similar stature. If you're not serious, buy the book, follow the advice, make a little money, and enjoy it - while it lasts.
