A Little Gem of a book

This book was very helpful to me especially at this point in my life when I needed these great tips, methods, and awareness to boost me up. There are many things in the book I have never tried that are so simple yet highly effective to lift you mind/body/spirit. The author also put things or worded them in a way that was perfect at "getting through to me" things I needed to do that I was resisting. For example using the term "divine nutrition" for beautiful,uplifting thoughts. Ah, my mind needs "nutrition" not a bunch of junky thoughts, yes that did it for me to help me change! I recommend this book if you're looking to raise your vibration fast, and you don't have time to read a ton of books on the subjects of various metaphysical or mind/body/spirit type books. It's also a good place to start if you're just getting interested in this topic as she points you to other authors of interest. It's a lovely read,obviously written with love and care that was very helpful yet not too complex to follow.

When you care enough about truth to want all the facts, then you want the kind of accurate scholarship that this author provides.
Mr. Couvillon's book fills a vital spot in understanding Patrick Henry.

Thirty years ago, I portrayed Patrick Henry quite a bit. I have delivered the "Liberty or Death" speech more times than I can count. Even so, Mr. Couvillon's compilation of quotes gave me fresh insights. Yes, I finally understand how Mr. Henry was so persuasive as to become the Demosthenes of his Age.

Someone "borrowed" my copy, so I have to buy another one. I highly recommend this book to all fans of real American history.

Great for young readers ready for chapter books

I'm part of a volunteer one-on-one after school reading program. My fourth grade partner loved books 2 and 3 in this series, so I ordered books 1 and 4 to complete our set. She is telling the other kids what great books these are. I really enjoyed helping her read the series - they are a great entry into chapter books. Missy and Oscar are wonderful characters who have really fun adventures. I can't wait for our granddaughters to be old enough to read this series.

Field Trip--the universal experience

Though my daughter is much older than the target audience for this book, she loves the humor and pictures. She was one of those kids who just went along on any trip because it meant a stop in the gift shop at the end. I think this story will appeal to both parents and children...after all, we've all put up with really boring trips just so we could get a rubber eraser and oversized souvenir pencil.

I got this and many others for my niece after getting her the first two after they were initially published. My only problem was that by the time I go these, my niece's reading level advanced so much that she read five of them in one night! She loved them. They are great for early readers.

Decent book about coffee, but there is a better one available for free!

If you are a new coffee fanatic, and are in to roasting your own coffee and wanting to learn all you can about coffee, go ahead and purchase this book, Pendergrast does a pretty good job of covering the coffee world from harvest to cup, and it is in an easy to read format. But I must say, I felt it was basically a "Cliff Note" of the all encompassing "Coffee Bible" that William H. Uker wrote almost a hundred years ago. Ukers book is titled "All About Coffee", and is the acknowledged complete work of every aspect of the coffee world. You can sometimes find the out of print book on Ebay, but it is usually over $150 for a worn out copy! I found that you can go to "Project Gutenberg" on the web and read the entire book, with all the full color hand drawn pictures, absolutely free of charge! Do it! You won't regret it!

Comprehensive and mostly interesting throughout

A well-written and informative book overall. Though I must echo the comments of other readers that state that it focuses more on the Americas. Having said that, it would have had to be a very long book to cover the world history of coffee. The book had some great parts which were very interesting (for example how America became addicted to drinking stale, packaged coffee in the 20th century) and parts that were less riveting (the incessant ups and downs of global coffee prices). Overall, I don't regret the purchase at all, it was a good read that left me with a much better understanding of coffee.

Im really enjoying the historical approach of Uncommon Grounds, which is less recounting the developments around coffee as it is a good discussion of how coffee influenced the growth of social and political institutions around the world. As a popular lit book it obviously doesnt get as critical as a scholarly publication might, but it is definitely a fun read.

My only complaint is that it breezes through the origins and domestication of coffee, but to be fair there very little data out there on that topic. Of all the "history of [esoteric item]" books out there right now, this is definitely one of the better and more interesting ones.

Best book on playing the Irish Tin Whistle

I have tried and failed to learn the Irish tinwhistle before. I recently started again with YouTube videos and this book, and I'm loving it. I realized the problem before was WAY too many boring American folk songs, not nearly enough IRISH songs! This book goes into great depth about not just the instrument, but all aspects of Irish music and Irish tinwhistle style, including very detailed discussions of ornamentation. I don't feel like I'm doing another Suzuki method, but rather that I get to jump into playing real Irish tinwhistle right away. (Disclosure: I used to play recorder so I already have some of the very basic skills, but I can still say that the instruction on those basics is also excellent.) The author really, really wants you to play and enjoy Irish traditional music!

Spencer touches reality

Expansive thought, driven by the engine of evolution, with fascinating insights and conclusions. This book examines the limitations and virtues of religion and science concurrently. Each contributes in their conclusions, with their interpretations, to what is reality. "What is" is the starting point. Likewise, Spencer combines the meaning of each to give understanding to which they aim. Terrific. ...Dave Mills

I recently read Martin Eden,..and Jack London cited this book so many times I had to look for it. Wow. Darwin. Spencer,..can you imagine how these guys blew the legs out from under the church? The book is an enjoyable read,..well, maybe for me,..as I am a scientist, a biologist,..but then,..what's your excuse for claiming stupidity,.. you have one life to live,..are you a farm animal,..a wally world denizen,..c'mon,..elevate your mind, and read this classic.

I think it's a shame that not many people read Spencer anymore.

Even if you don't agree with every premise of this book, Spencer still offers some very nourishing food for thought on many subjects. And it's very interesting to follow his reasoning process.
