My 10 year old is an avid reader and she absolutely loves chapter books - she recently discovered this series and finished this along with the first book. She really likes Alice-Miranda! For the holidays, Alice-Miranda brings her best friend, Jacinta, home to her family's estate, where the girls must deal with a cranky, mischievous boy, a visiting movie star, a snooping stranger, and a secretive grandmother.

This is an accelerated reader (AR) book. My kids have to read books and take AR test as a part of their reading grade so I'm always on the look out for a good AR book. AR RL: 4.7 - AR Pts: 7.0

The authors correctly observe that we are bombarded at every turn by marketing messages, from billboards to product placements to carloads of junkmail. They lay a multitude of sins at the door of the ad industry, from pollution to domestic violence to racial genocide. This book is well written and researched and is for the most part insightful. However, at times the authors adopt a sanctimonious tone and offer up simplistic analyses and solutions to complex social issues. A Maddening Perspective

MARKETING MADNESS, the predecessor of Naomi Klein's more recent NO LOGO, is an easy-to-read, entertaining and well-chronicled testament to the growing misinformation and miscommunication about and surrounding human values. The authors decry those marketing and advertising strategies and techniques that attempt to imbed human value systems into the merchandising and selling of products in increasingly ingenuous ways. While it is certainly a sociopolitical manifesto against hyper-commercialism, MARKETING MADNESS unfortunately demonstrates that these strategies and techniques target their intended audiences all too successfully. Yet, without this book, we might have remained only subconsiously aware or completely unconscious of the tremendous power of consumer narcissism seen through the eyes of global corporatism and one of its most visible representatives. This is a must-read for all marketing, advertising, public relations and mass communications undergrad and graduate students as well as current practitioners in these fields. Perhaps it will help all think twice about the effect that their individual choices have on the world around them.

Outstanding!

This book is extremely readable and informative. It is a true eye-opener for anyone who is not already a professional in the advertising or marketing fields. I think it will help me to shield myself from the assault that really does exist but to which I was previously blind -- the assault by people intent on getting me (and you) to reach into my pocket or my bank account, take out some money, and give it to them. A great read!

Introduction to Logic

Before embarking on a "formal" logic course, my husband and I decided it would be best to give our fifth grader an "introduction to logic." While doing an internet search, I came across "The Critical Thinking Series" by Remedia Publications.
"The Critical Thinking Series" is based on Bloom's Taxonomy of thinking skills. The activities begin at a simple, concrete level and as the student's abilities increase, more abstract and complex activities are introduced. The series consist of sixteen work texts: Analogies, Classification, Absurdities, Similarities and Differences, Sequence, Drawing Solutions, Using Logic, Finding Facts, Following Directions, Relying on Reason, Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. Each work text is consumable and includes the answer key.
"The Critical Thinking Series" will give your student a firm foundation to think logically while preparing them for "formal" logic. I would recommend following this series with "Critical Thinking Book 1 and Book 2" by Anita Harnadek.

About the Author

Ben S. Branch is Professor of Finance at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he has taught finance, investment, banking, and industrial organization for over 30 years. He was previously on the faculty at Dartmouth College, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas, and has served on the boards of several corporations, including the First Republic Bank, BankEast, Bank of New England, and Proactive Technologies. An outstanding book on investing that stands out from the crowd

I've been on a quest for the last 3 years or so to educate myself on the area of investing (I have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and develop commercial software development for a living, but prior to a few years ago, I knew almost nothing about investing and finance). Over the last three years or so, I've read some 47 books in the area of investing and finance, and this book is one of the very best of the entire lot; it really stands out. Prof. Branch's book covers numerous topics that none of these other books cover, such as the nuts and bolts of bidding, the practical use of options and margin accounts, etc. It has a lot of extremely practical information that for some reason is not even mentioned or discussed in other books. It's really an outstanding book, and now I'm hoping that now I can put the knowledge I gained from the book to good use. [...]good this book is and how much it stood out from the other investing books I've read.
