Despite its age and somewhat outdated nomenclatures, this book is still the best comprehensive introductory hydrology book in existence. There are better quantitative hydrology texts (e.g., Dingman), better engineering texts (e.g., Chow and prodigies), more cogent overviews of hydrology (e.g., Hornberger et al.), and more appropriate "handbooks" (e.g., Chow or Maidment). But, Dunne and Leopold is the only text I know of that provides a good balance among applied context, quantitative tools, and conceptual descriptions of basic and integrated processes while retaining its comprehensive character without copious mistakes and errors. I sincerely hope that a new, similarly good text emerges soon.

A good handbook for any planner

Dunne & Leopold's "Water In Environmental Planning" is a great tool of reference for the planner of any type. It addresses key issues in the role of water during the planning process and also includes important formulas for solving water problems. If you can get past a boring first chapter, this book is well worth the money and makes a great reference for the urban, rural or environmental planner. 4 stars.

CINDERELLA RETELLING - A RELAXED READ

After living twenty-five years under the thumb of her tyrannical father, Odel wants nothing to do with being controlled by another man. She has vowed to never marry. After her father's death, her mother's best friend arrives and informs her that she is her godmother, her fairy godmother, Aunt Tildy. Tildy then sets about to teach Odel that, despite the cruel treatment she received from her father, love is a very real and special, even magical, occurrence.

I had popped onto the library website to see about requesting the newest in the Argeneau series. Right next to it, was this one, and I thought to myself, "I didn't know Lynsay Sands wrote Fairy Tale retellings." It was available as an e-book download, so I took a chance. I am so glad I did! This is an unique re-telling of the Cinderella story set in 14th century England.

This is a short, sweet, Christmas novella. I already knew I loved Ms. Sands' popular vampire series, but now I'm hoping she produces more of these Fairy Tales, as well.

Enchanting!

A delightful tale with a Christmas backdrop set in a 14th century castle full of magic. Michelle is a charming Lord not thinking of marriage while Odel is the mistreated daughter not wanting to marry at all
. Add to that a come back to life Aunt godmother with fairy dust and a magic cane trying to earn her Angel wings. Mix that all together and you have a wonderful medieval Cinderella story. Well done! Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo !!

A Cute & Charming Short Story

I read this little novella in the 'Mistletoe & Magic' anthology which was originally published in 2000. Though the kindle version states its 68 pages, the story itself began on page 9 in my paperback and ended on page 95, which would make it 86 pages long. This quick tale takes place right around Christmastime in England, 1324 and centers around Odel, a lonely young woman who after losing her father decides she never wants to be under another man's thumb ever again. Add in her fairy godmother, a little magic, and a gentle and chivalrous knight, and you've got the makings of a cute and charming romance indeed...

I thought Odel and Michelle were both kind and endearing characters. Their romance was very sweet and put a smile on my face even if it did move a bit too fast. The plot was well paced and the dialogue and happenings had me laughing out loud. Overall it was a funny and lovely fairy tale that was a fun way to spend an hour or two. There was one sex scene at the very end which was not overly explicit but detailed nonetheless. While this story didn't blow me away, it was still an enjoyable and satisfying read in the end. At $3.99 I definitely think its overpriced, but if you can get it for $1.99 or less, I'd say give it a try.

Outstanding but for the RIGHT audience...

This is a unique and outstanding book for the right audience. And therein lieth the rub. I am using it as an introduction for Software Engineers in an online course on Category Theory (CT), even though CT is not even mentioned in the index. By giving rigorous coverage of types from untyped Lambda calc all the way through Barendregt's - lambda cubes, the reader is totally immersed in the machinery of the construction of proof assistants.

The publisher states that this is a great intro, and only requires undergrad math. Maybe undergrad math, senior year, at MIT, with half a dozen courses in set theory, analysis, and formal proof systems? Can we be honest-- today in the US you can get your PhD in math without taking a single set theory course, let alone Category Theory! And, just like you can drive a car without knowing how it works, even as an advanced software designer, you can use proof assistant software without having the foggiest about underlying mappings and translations between, say, number theory and lambda calculus. That said, EVERYONE who has read this book in my classes, even those who only got 30% of it, say to a person that it made them better thinkers, more intuitive and gave them a MUCH deeper understanding of how computational mathematics and software proof systems work. I mean, just the discussion of assumptions vs. axioms and primitives taken as definitions sets off light bulbs at the PhD level about what variables, constants and parameters really are.

You will see the elegant way that the applied tool of using synthetic division and remainders can more efficiently perform polynomial division than long division itself. The theorem is used an a deep exercise and example of proof formalization, mechanization, efficient code, proven correctness etc. work together, giving not only the underpinnings of proof assistants, but also seeing the practical side (from a computational complexity/ efficiency point of view) of typing.

Highly recommended for the right audience, but not for the faint at heart. VERY well written, as it does not use the usual, highly abstract terse, PROBLEM/ PROBLEM/ THEORY/ PROOF/ EXAMPLE/ EXAMPLE... now it's your turn technique. Instead outstanding (though British) English is used to flesh out the details of what and why techniques are being used in each toolbox. This will need to be studied deeply to get to 30% if you are new to lambda, type or category theories, some of the most abstract topics in math/computing, but the reward is immense, not just in those fields, but in making us better understand the workings of human logic, proof, evidence and clear thinking.

They gather everything on their list that they need for the celebration but realize that the pink flowers are missing. So off Harry O'Hay goes to find a field of flowers for his bride, Betty O'Barley. Meanwhile, the farmer notices that Harry is missing and brings home a new scarecrow, Reginal Rake, to take his place. The newcomer promptly begins to woo Betty and tries to impress her by making smoke rings with a cigar. This leads to an unfortunate incident in which she ends up on fire. Thankfully, Harry appears: "'Betty!' cried Harry. 'My own future wife!'/He poured on the water—and saved Betty's life." This story is told through simple rhyming couplets that are intended for young children, but the plot isn't satisfying. The author may have been trying to promote an anti-smoking message; unfortunately, it is lost in the disconcerting image of the scarecrow burning. Delightful and Imaginative

As grandparents of four, all under 5 years old, we were delighted to be introduced to the work of Julia Donaldson through her book and animated production, available on Netflix, of 'Room On The Broom'. We immediately purchased the hardback book and each of our grandkids can recite it verbatim! Since then we have purchased the 'Room On The Broom' dolls (witch, cat, dog) and several of the other works by Ms. Donaldson. The illustrations are wonderful and each book is delightful and imaginative. The children love each and every one!

some of Nancy's best, most accessible and most beautiful work

This volume is quite lovely and perhaps the most engaging writing I've read from Nancy thus far. The translation is just excellent, keeping so much of the beauty of Nancy's own French. The text is about the practice of drawing, but it leads into so much more... following on themes from Nancy's work in Corpus on embodiment, on sexuality following his work in L'"il y a" du rapport sexuel. The portrayal of subjectivity is quite beautiful and engaging. I've completed the book about a week ago and my mind is still full of ideas spilling out from my encounter with this book.
