Real Nuts & Bolts Time Management

This fine book stands alone as a real "nuts & bolts" guide to time management. Refreshingly, Griessman does not ask the reader to buy into an integrated or even singular "System" of managing your time. There are no self tests, no "12 Step" program, no gimmicks.
Quite simply, this book is about survival. If your boat were sinking or you were lost in the wilderness, the last thing you would want (or have time to read) would be a lengthy treatise on the theory of bouyancy or how people get lost. Rather, Griessman instructs from the outset that you "Learn survival techniques from the survivors."
In this vein, Griessman's approach is decidedly simple: 1)These are successful people; 2) Here are specific tactics that they use to save time and survive; 3) You fill in the blank. This format is woven into 15 short chapters with an accompanying commentary which is almost editorial in nature. This provides just enough cohesion in the book to give it structure, without detracting from its readability.
If you're looking for a lengthy treatise on time management, riddled with charts, self tests and lengthy explanations about why you don't have enough time, then leave this book on the shelf. "Time Tactics" is really a field manual - the same kind of lean, to the point writing you'd hope to find in a life raft.

Highly useful! A good reminder of easy tools to save time

Unlike most time management books going from chapter to chapter that lead readers to plan, set and prioritize their personal goals, treating time management problems essentially as life management problems, this book consists of 15 chapters of 96 short essays or tactics that you can easily apply to our daily lives. What a pity that Amazon does not post sample pages as it usually does which includes the Content pages so you can easily understand what kind of book this is, I take the pleasure to do it for you and hope it will help you grasp what the book tells.

He offers many common-sense pointers on how to avoid wasting your time - and how to keep others from wasting it, too. It's eye-opening to realize and calculate the value and importance of every hour, even your leisure time. People in all walks of life - students, stay-at-home parents, business leaders, teachers, self-employed workers - can glean ideas for using time effectively from this book. If you are a procrastinator, this book will encourage you to "do it now." While some of the suggestions here may seem too simplistic to those who already employ some time-management tactics, we [...] recommend this book for inveterate - if inadvertent - time-wasters. If you have been looking for classic epic fantasy with large casts of characters, but LGBTQ+, then FROM UNDER THE MOUNTAIN for you. A young empress inherited her throne through sudden and suspicious circumstances, and must juggle with the politics of her council and a great evil aiming to break free.

Guerline is by far my favourite character in this, perhaps because her strength has nothing to do with magic. Or her throne, really. She's surrounded by powerful beings yet holds more courage, is more level-headed, and more gentle than most of them combine. I don't tend to root for MCs as much as I did for Guerline, especially when they have a crown. Honestly, to me she carries the entire novel on her shoulder.

Which isn't to say the book is perfect. There are several scenes in the first half establishing the four witches clan (NAMED AFTER DNA BASES THAT WAS COOL) which are fun, but ultimately slow down the action, and characters and plot threads sometimes get mysteriously dropped. I expect we'll see them again in Book 2, but it's a little weird that these things don't even get a mention to kind of close the deal.

TL;DR: Amazing and complex queer crew, solid worldbuilding, and the high stakes of a great epic fantasy. The occasional loose ends won't kill your enjoyment of this wonderful book, and you should go read.

the pacing was perfect. The last chapter left a lot to be ...

I have to admit, I was a bit apprehensive at first. Gueraline in the beginning wasn’t that likable, and a lot of the descriptions focused on gore and romance.

However, by chapter 10 I was so absorbed into the world she envisioned, that I was completely hooked. The lands were vivid, the characters were rich with personality, the different communities of people were believable, and the plot flowed in such a way that I had to keep reading.

I also feel up until say the last chapter, the pacing was perfect. The last chapter left a lot to be desired, since it felt more like it was cut off; almost like a season finale of a TV Show than tying up all the loose ends that a final chapter of a book needs. Though if this is being left open for a second book, then this complaint is miniscule.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of these characters, and give 5/5 stars as a rating.

From Under the Mountain is a refreshing fantasy story featuring many diverse characters and a very unique storyline. There is at least a little bit of something in here for everyone, whether you like science, politics, or even just magic. The characters are all relatable, despite their many different roles and personalities, and it was very easy to find myself emotionally invested and desperate to read another page. This novel is very fast-paced and suspenseful with amazingly well-done plot twists. It is definitely not for those who dislike violence and gory descriptions; Spivey provides very detailed descriptions, whether the subject is grotesque or glorious. Enjoyed the descriptions of the characters. The Russian names and locations were a little difficult to keep track of, but the author did reference earlier plot to help me recall the significance of a person or place.

An interesting read

This was a difficult book to read, because of the content. The times in Russia were hard at best, economically as well as socially. people were encouraged to spy on one another, neighbors, friends and family. This created a lot of morally challenging situations and choices were made out of fear, survival and necessity, morality did not always enter into these decisions. A very challenging read leaving the reader to wonder what she might have done differently under the same circumstances. The one thing that jumped out at me was that in the midst of everything, love did prevail which leaves us with hope.

I have read most of his books and find him consistently fascinating. The characters he creates interact in realistic ways and although I don't always like his decisions about who lives and who dies, who is betrayed and who betrays, (no one wants the characters they like to suffer, but there would be precious little literature if that never happened) they all make sense within the context of the very realistic world he has created. And that world is agonizingly researched, but the research never "shows" in any way other than a well-woven tapestry of time and place.
