Dr. Michael Burlingame's magnificent Abraham Lincoln biography is the new sine qua non of Lincoln study

Your humble reviewer has just concluded Abraham Lincoln Volume 2. Dr. Michael Burlingham is the distinguished author. The former Connecticut College history professor is now based in Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois. There he continues to write, speak and publish on the life of our martyred sixteenth POTUS.
The second volume (834 pages of small print text in addition to period photographs and illustrations)cover the Lincoln administration from his election in November 1860 until the president's assassination at the hand of John Wilkes Booth in April 1865,
This scholarly book is readable to the general reader but is incredibly detailed! It seems as if we get reviews of every speech Lincoln wrote by famed contemporaries as well as ordinary people. The book could have been edited down to increase interest but for hardcore Lincoln students like myself this book is boon and a blessing!
Lincoln(1809-1865) arose from an obscure Kentucky book to the presidency in the election of 1860. South Carolina seceded in December of that year leading to the firing on Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April 1861. Lincoln was left to captain the Union ship safely to the shore of peace. He did so despite constant and harsh criticism and many valleys of despond. During his term he issued the Emancipation Proclamation and defeated the Confederacy in the hardest war we in the United States have ever had to contest. Lincoln had to deal with Radicals in Congress and in the Cabinet; Conservative Democrats; Southern Unionists and such difficult people as Edwin Stanton Secretary of War; William Seward Secretary of State and Simon P. Chase Secretary of the Treasury. Lincoln's wife Mary was a big spender who caused Lincoln much embarrasment. The Lincolns had to suffer the death of Willie their son in February 1862. Lincoln believed he would lose his reelection campaign but defeated General McClellan in the crucial 1864 election. Lincoln hated slavery and abandoned his gradual emancipation and colonization schemes to push for passage of the thirteen amendment to the United States Constitution. Lincoln was folksy enjoying jokes but kept his own counsel and was a political genius. Only he could have led the nation through its bloody odyssey to victory and freedom. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the immortal orations in human history.
Burlingame has done incredible research in presenting this great book to the reading public. The book is a classic and will be studied for generations. A hard read but essential if you would know our greatest president in detail! Highly recommended for all serious students of Lincoln and the American Civil War!

Road Map to Political Maturity

Michael Burlingame's two-volume biography of Lincoln is far and away the best I've ever read--and there are some mighty fine Lincoln works available. His "you are there" methodology of presenting Lincoln in medias res, allowing us to see the world as both Lincoln and his contemporaries saw it, provides a fresh way of appreciating both his achievements and the personal advantages and obstacles he brought to his singular work. It's also a primer for contemporary Americans, mired as we are in a mess of our own making--much like Lincoln understood slavery as a national blight, not just a sectional one--to rise to the challenge he threw down in his unsurpassed Second Inaugural. Lincoln's many gifts include his uncompromising commitment to adopt and hold a holistic view of America, one nation under God, and do all in his power to win the civil war and emerge from it as "a more perfect union." Burlingame notes in closing that Lincoln as an individual possessed a consciousness still rare in the world; yet his rise from poverty, ignorance, and cultural backwardness to savior of his nation challenges all of us to take on a similar stance. If Lincoln could do it, so could everyone. The only useful question is, why don't we?

How could this be surpassed??

I've been interested in the Civil War era since I was a boy; I've read a number of books, fine books, about Lincoln. Burlingame's two-volume biography is in its own class. Time after time, I've marveled at the background information he was providing for the first time. I was struck first with the genuinely insightful way in which the Author wrote of Lincoln's youth, formative experiences, relations with his father. I can't remember ever getting from another author the kind of insights offred here into Stephen Douglas; the Lincoln-Douglas debates came alive here for me as never before. Nor do I ever remember the issues between the North and the South expressed and explained with such clarity.
Lincoln is a most worthy subject of study; there is nothing more rewarding than devoting the time and effort to master this book.
