An interesting and fresh historical perspective.

Hugh Kearney argues that the history of the British Isles can not be properly understood by simply considering a single 'national' interpretation. The first five chapters of his book consider Celtic society, the Roman invasion, post-Roman centuries, Viking settlements and the Norman invasion - all within the context of the British Isles. The later chapters continue with the same approach, and bring a fresh perspective on well known events such as the 'English' civil war, the various Acts of Union (Wales in 1536, Scotland in 1707, and Ireland in 1800), the formation of the Irish Free State and the two world wars.

Better as a "reference" volume, I think

I admit it - I haven't finished this book yet. I find it hard slogging, despite the fact that I am interested in British history and want to learn more about it. I am surprised to find that one trade review referred to the book as "fast-moving". I do not find it to be so. But then, maybe I am just not enough of an historian to go for this. The book is very complete, as far as I can tell. But it's really not exciting reading - it would work well if a person needed the information for reference or something, but I prefer my histories to have more of a narrative thread to them than this one. It's not *bad*, just not as engaging as some other history books. Perhaps this one was not intended for the "general reader".

A good place to start British studies!

Kearney is one of the first modern scholars to break away from the English historical model and confront the history of Ireland Scotland, and Wales as they correlate with England. His ideas on the English insistence of cultural superiority are spot on in a historiographical context. DNA evidence has indeed shown that people of the Four Nations share a common geneology dating back to the last land bridge that connected the Island to the mainland. Some Jute, Danish, Norwegian, and Friscian DNA is found in certain areas; but around 80% of the gene pool remains native. It is surprising the level of cultural suppression that occurred against the Irishry, Welshry and Scottani on grounds that they were an inferior race in light of such information. All in all Kearney represents a new era of British scholarship. The only critique I can offer is that "celtic" migration theory has been disposed of in recent years. Crafts that show Celtic influence were generally copies of mainland items or rarely merchant trades between Ireland and Gaul. Otherwise, it is an excellent read!

Oh my.....Greek God!!!

I read all about the Greek gods when in high school and college. I enjoyed the stories, but have to admit that they can be rather dry. This book was wonderful. Belle has written a book that will open the world of Greek mythology to a whole new generation. I found it a really interesting read and the characters wre very engaging. I am already looking forward to her next volume. Good job Belle!!!

Fantastic break out novel!

I have to give this book five stars! First off it was written by a 14 year old, for 14 year olds! It was entirely colorful, adorable, playful, and age appropriate. It is not often you get books that actual 14 years olds should be reading in the young adult genre.

If I am being honest, Belle has a writer talent. She was born to weave clever stories about ancient gods being reborn. She brought the characters to life so well, and there were no plot holes! It was refreshing, clever,and fun to read. I instantly bought a copy for my daughters kindle and will be buying a copy for her school! I can't wait for the second book!!!!!

Fun and Enjoyable

Rise of the Olympians is a middle grade book written by an extremely talented young woman.

Lilah is about to celebrate her birthday. She puts clip on rainbow colors in her hair and gets cake, doesn’t get in trouble at school and gets presents. One of her presents includes a beautiful necklace her father gets for her. Then she has a dream that tells her she needs to reunite the others to fight against an upcoming evil threat. Lilah thinks it’s all just a dream and then she wakes up with rainbow hair and some boys are telling her they’re Greek gods. Lilah’s life just got interesting.

Lilah was a fun character and I really enjoyed her hyperactive charisma about everything. She doesn’t freak out too much. I love how her character is totally correct in how she would act. Sometimes I get a middle grade book and some of the actions or thoughts the characters have don’t seem realistic. Lilah was one hundred percent authentic which made the story for me.

I have to say Belle Ward takes after her mother with torturous endings that definitely leave you craving more. Can’t wait for the next one.

Mistakes can be made or, even worse, you are wasting potential opportunities due to ignorance and misunderstanding.

This is an advice-rich, forward-thinking book that is going to benefit predominantly SMEs, yet much of the same goodness can be used within the larger corporate beasts too with a degree of modification. If you let it, the book may even help refocus and restructure processes within your company that may not directly touch on the digital realm since the same advice may be universal, such as how you prospect a customer and present to them; elements may differ but the core remains the same. I won't rehash the plot as the other two reviewers did so well, but let me just tell you that you don't want to miss this one! If you like your hero's ala proud Darcy types and bold heroines with a bit of steamy love scences added to the mix, you'll love this one! Marcus, Duke of Exeter is the arrogant snob who looks down upon his plain provincial 'wife'. Marcus Reece, duke of Exeter, had always acted to preserve the family name, and his twin brother's along with it. To keep his brother, David, from being called out for a duel of honor, Marcus again cleans up David's mess and sends him out of London for awhile. But David ends up injuring his leg when his carriage wrecked during a race in a small town called Middleborough. The vicar's widow, Hannah Preston, takes care of David as he heals. David comes to care for Hannah, and for her small daughter, Molly. David is sincere when he proposes to Hannah, but the day before the wedding he panics.

Hannah curses her own idiocy. With few choices open to her, she weds a gentleman she hardly knows. David escorts Hannah and Molly to London, says he must be away on business for a bit, and promptly disappears. Hannah does not learn that David forged Marcus's name to the marriage license until the cold and aloft duke appears before her in person with accusations. Of course, Hannah is ready to simply walk out. But before she can, David and Marcus's sister, Celia, and stepmother, Rosalind, arrives and proceeds to gush all over Hannah and Molly.

Reluctantly, Hannah agrees to play the part of Marcus's duchess for a while. In doing so, Hannah will help secure Molly's future and Marcus can keep his relatives from hating David. The entire mess would sort itself out within only a month or two. Meanwhile, Marcus can continue his investigation with Bow Street of a counterfeiting ring. David seems to be mixed up in entire counterfeiting scheme and Marcus hopes to prove his brother innocent. But with tempting Hannah nearby, Marcus is having trouble concentrating. Marcus learns that by playing the part of husband, he has a chance to claim happiness.

***** Caroline Linden's characters are so vivid that, for awhile, I forgot they were all part of a fictional piece. As I read, I could easily see the events unfold before me and felt as though I were a part of everything. An outstanding story that I hated to see end. BRAVA! *****

Really, really good!!

This book was fascinating for me. I didn't know if Ms Linden was going to be able to keep me interested in the "deceived into marrying the wrong man" theme for long enough but, Boy, did she ever.

Marcus and Hannah are mature enough that they made logical decisions regarding their marriage. Hannah actually tried to leave and go away when she found that David had signed his brother's name in the parish registry. She had no place to go but her conscience would not allow her to stay and let the Duke be responsible for her. The author was able to convince me that she really would have left and wasn't just giving lip service to the things she was saying. Marcus was willing to make great sacrificies in order to protect the honour of his family. By having the counterfieting plot woven into the story Ms Linden provided a bridge for these two characters to get to know each other and fall in love. Very, very cleverly done.

Marcus seems to be a cold, unfeeling member of the English aristocracy. Hannah seems to be a provincal, plain widow. It was wonderful to watch this author move these characters toward the outcome we wanted to happen. I might have liked for Hannah to have been a widow for more that six months. That short time period bothered me a little. Wonder why the author didn't give her more time to get over the death of a husband she is portrayed as really loving?

Read it. Judge for yourself. It is well worth the time and money.

Herbal Medicine

I've studied herbs for years, and have collected many books on the subject, but of them all, Mowreys' book The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine holds a pre-eminent place. Well written,intelligently and solidly researched, this book stands head over shoulders above the plethora of herbal books that derive their information mostly from folklore and anecdotal reports. Mowrey's book seperates the "wheat from the chaff". Highly recommended.

BEST Herbal Medicine book!!!!

This book is FANTASTIC!!! Go look in the pages and check out how they have their index. Most books' indexes you go to look up a word like *asthma* and you get page numbers that you go to and hope it's what you were looking for. In this book you look up asthma in the index and it shows you which herbs and the page numbers! That was worth the price of the book to me! Same with herb listings... you look up the herb and it tells you which ailment it will help and the page number to find it on.
Within the book you will find DETAILED explanations on which herbs to use, how much and how to apply them (i.e. gargling, teas, capsules, etc.)
This book will be my main herbal medicine book for years to come! Out of all my herbal books this one *by far* is the BEST book on herbal medicine that I have in my library! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone seeking natural alternatives to health!!

Pleasantly surprised by the information

I was pleasantly surprised by the information presented in the book. I purchased it for a quick reference. I quickly found myself reading page after page learning quite a bit about herbal remedies. I would recommend it to any one who is interested in healthy alternatives in addition to medications.
