About the Author
Albert Ellis, Ph.D., was the intellectual founder of all clinical approaches that now fall under the rubric of cognitive behavior therapy, and he is generally regarded as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. His Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is now practiced and taught throughout the world, along with the numerous similar therapies that it spawned. Dr. Ellis wrote 70 books and more than 600 journal articles and monographs. At the Albert Ellis Institute, which he founded and managed for more than half a century, he personally trained or supervised thousands of clinicians. As a practicing psychologist, he personally helped more than 10,000 people lead less painful and more productive lives. Dr. Ellis received dozens of awards from organizations like the American Psychological Association and American Counseling Association for his tireless work in advancing psychology, counseling, and social work. When he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1947, he had already established himself as the most renowned sex therapist in the first half of the 20th century, and he then went on to revolutionize the field of clinical psychology. Dr. Ellis died July 24, 2007, while this book was in the final stages of preparation.

Dr. Michael Burlingame's magnificent Abraham Lincoln biography is the new sine qua non of Lincoln study

Your humble reviewer has just concluded Abraham Lincoln Volume 2. Dr. Michael Burlingham is the distinguished author. The former Connecticut College history professor is now based in Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois. There he continues to write, speak and publish on the life of our martyred sixteenth POTUS.
The second volume (834 pages of small print text in addition to period photographs and illustrations)cover the Lincoln administration from his election in November 1860 until the president's assassination at the hand of John Wilkes Booth in April 1865,
This scholarly book is readable to the general reader but is incredibly detailed! It seems as if we get reviews of every speech Lincoln wrote by famed contemporaries as well as ordinary people. The book could have been edited down to increase interest but for hardcore Lincoln students like myself this book is boon and a blessing!
Lincoln(1809-1865) arose from an obscure Kentucky book to the presidency in the election of 1860. South Carolina seceded in December of that year leading to the firing on Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April 1861. Lincoln was left to captain the Union ship safely to the shore of peace. He did so despite constant and harsh criticism and many valleys of despond. During his term he issued the Emancipation Proclamation and defeated the Confederacy in the hardest war we in the United States have ever had to contest. Lincoln had to deal with Radicals in Congress and in the Cabinet; Conservative Democrats; Southern Unionists and such difficult people as Edwin Stanton Secretary of War; William Seward Secretary of State and Simon P. Chase Secretary of the Treasury. Lincoln's wife Mary was a big spender who caused Lincoln much embarrasment. The Lincolns had to suffer the death of Willie their son in February 1862. Lincoln believed he would lose his reelection campaign but defeated General McClellan in the crucial 1864 election. Lincoln hated slavery and abandoned his gradual emancipation and colonization schemes to push for passage of the thirteen amendment to the United States Constitution. Lincoln was folksy enjoying jokes but kept his own counsel and was a political genius. Only he could have led the nation through its bloody odyssey to victory and freedom. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the immortal orations in human history.
Burlingame has done incredible research in presenting this great book to the reading public. The book is a classic and will be studied for generations. A hard read but essential if you would know our greatest president in detail! Highly recommended for all serious students of Lincoln and the American Civil War!

Road Map to Political Maturity

Michael Burlingame's two-volume biography of Lincoln is far and away the best I've ever read--and there are some mighty fine Lincoln works available. His "you are there" methodology of presenting Lincoln in medias res, allowing us to see the world as both Lincoln and his contemporaries saw it, provides a fresh way of appreciating both his achievements and the personal advantages and obstacles he brought to his singular work. It's also a primer for contemporary Americans, mired as we are in a mess of our own making--much like Lincoln understood slavery as a national blight, not just a sectional one--to rise to the challenge he threw down in his unsurpassed Second Inaugural. Lincoln's many gifts include his uncompromising commitment to adopt and hold a holistic view of America, one nation under God, and do all in his power to win the civil war and emerge from it as "a more perfect union." Burlingame notes in closing that Lincoln as an individual possessed a consciousness still rare in the world; yet his rise from poverty, ignorance, and cultural backwardness to savior of his nation challenges all of us to take on a similar stance. If Lincoln could do it, so could everyone. The only useful question is, why don't we?

How could this be surpassed??

I've been interested in the Civil War era since I was a boy; I've read a number of books, fine books, about Lincoln. Burlingame's two-volume biography is in its own class. Time after time, I've marveled at the background information he was providing for the first time. I was struck first with the genuinely insightful way in which the Author wrote of Lincoln's youth, formative experiences, relations with his father. I can't remember ever getting from another author the kind of insights offred here into Stephen Douglas; the Lincoln-Douglas debates came alive here for me as never before. Nor do I ever remember the issues between the North and the South expressed and explained with such clarity.

Lincoln is a most worthy subject of study; there is nothing more rewarding than devoting the time and effort to master this book.

From the Author
The "Spiritual Warfare Prayer" was written for my own spiritual strength, during a period of tremendous stress, relentless spiritual attacks and heavy oppression. It was never written to be viewed or shared with anyone else, and certainly not to be published. I wrote it to keep my mind, which was under heavy and constant attack, firmly fixed on the written Word of God. During times when I desired yet could not pray effectively this written prayer kept me standing firm.
I first shared it when I was asked to be a guest speaker at a church. I vacillated as the Holy Spirit kept drawing me to teach from it. A visiting pastor from out of town was present; and was so impressed with the prayer that he invited me to be a keynote speaker at a conference he was conducting on spiritual warfare. From there, evangelists and missionaries took my "Spiritual Warfare Prayer" and distributed it to those in their travels around the world. During the months following, surprising testimonials came to me of the power and effectiveness this prayer had on the lives of so many. Nevertheless, it is my personal prayer. I have used it many times over the years; and use it to this day in my spiritual fight of faith.

About the Author
Darrell C. Porter is a non-denominational, full gospel evangelist. He received his Masters Degree in Christian Education from the International Bible College & Seminary in Independence, Missouri.

Rev. Porter has worked extensively with urban youth in Chicago, Los Angeles and Central Illinois for over 40 years. He has worked with street gang members, dropouts and substance abuse offenders.

He has conducted well over six thousand trainings, workshops and seminars on evangelism, spiritual warfare, substance abuse, conflict resolution and youth and gang violence, nationwide. �He has trained ministers, pastors, other church leaders, educators, community leaders and professionals. �He has taught several years at a Central Illinois Bible College.

For over 28 years he has also been a regular guest and co-host on Christian television as well as other local and regional television stations. He was a co-founder and board member of the Decatur Prayer Center, and also a chaplain for the Decatur, Illinois Police Department. He has pastored over 6 churches in the United States.
He currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada where he continues to write and publish the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Prayerline Newsletter. He is founder and director of the Ichthus Institute for Enrichment & Christian Development and is pastor of the New Covenant International Ministries. He also works with local, national and international Bible-based, Christ-centered ministries in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The ''Spiritual Warfare Prayer booklet''; was well written I found it to be easily read ,the content was very informed, words defined ,and scriptural;I could actionally feel the writer passion and sincerity. I was very impressed with the patient the writer took to share this prayer with the public to help other to become skillfully prepared, arm and equip for spiritual battle.The wording was great I particular enjoying reading about the author his experience and how this prayer was effected for him ,and others in intercessor prayer, The prayer is scriptural ,and ,can be use as a study guide, also with everyday devotional reading. I would recommend it to; anyone who is under the attack of the enemy and have had an ongoing battle, and have pray, and yet battling in the same battle without result; to consider obtaining this booklet ,

Spiritual warfare prayer, as said by the author, is truly a book that is powerful and an effective weapon against spiritual attacks and the strongholds of the devil. this book made me realize that as Christians, we should always expect trouble and trial times and that how we handle this trial times is what matters most. "knowledge of the word of God and preparation for spiritual warfare is imperative for victory over Satan" This line says we should always prepare so that the war does not get to us unaware. Pastor Darrell was elaborate defining key words such as spiritual, warfare and also went ahead to teach how to pray the spiritual warfare prayer. This book is a "must get" as it will add up to your weapon no matter how spiritually prepared you are for the attack on the strongholds of the devil.

More like 68 days -- but who's counting. An excellent introduction to anti-aging practices

First, let me spill the beans: while the title advertises a 17-day plan, it's actually a series of four 17 day plans -- each one designed to address certain issues associated with aging. After introducing some aging-related science, the author discusses our cultural expectations about aging, and then confronts them directly. Then we get the four anti-aging plans:

Cycle 1, Stop Your Aging Clock, covers the basics of aging, and sets up the basics for limiting its degenerative effects.

Cycle 2, Restore, focuses on heart, breath, and brain. Cycle 3, Refine, covers the issues of sexuality and masculinity.

Cycle 4, Renew, discusses detoxification and the relationship between healthy living and longevity.

Each cycle has a 17-day plan attached to it, designed to put the section's principles into action.

The material works out well. And it's certainly an excellent introduction to aging, as well as a practical guide to minimizing the harm aging can do. It's rather basic, and those really interested in digging in to the subject of longevity and anti-aging would do well to check out more in-depth books. But this is a great place to start.

Now I want to live to be 100!

Dr. Moreno does it again! After his trend setting blockbuster, the 17 Day Diet Book, he explains in both engaging and understandable terms the keys to avoid the effects of aging. I've read many books on this subject and this is by far the best written and most interesting book on aging. The 4-cycle plan, each cycle focusing on a different body system, is a must follow guide to keeping you healthy. His descriptions range from rebuilding and maintaining your joints, heart, gut, and brain. For many of us that have seen the effects of aging, this is a true treasure of information on how to feel and stay young. A must read for both your parents and your kids!

Slowing Aging

Over all I enjoyed reading this book since instead of giving advice it is written in an entertaining and informative way. I also appreciate the fact at the end of the book Dr. M. admits there is no way to stop aging but by having a healthy life style one can slow aging. Just like everything else in life just reading one book, this one or another, or making healthy choices for seventeen days is not going to change one's life. Like the author says staying healthy as one ages is a lot of work and commitment.

In spite of the fact it is well-written, there was nothing in the book I hadn't already known since I have been reading books like this for decades. However I was pleasantly surprised to see the author seems to know much more than most conventional doctors do about preventive medicine and nutrition.

Some of the things in the book I didn't care for:
The healthy weight chart doesn't seem realistic or healthy to me. For example: a 5' 2" woman is supposed to be 99-121 lbs. ( Please let's get real) and also please do your own research before taking any osteoporosis and cholesterol lowering drugs because you may not like what you find out.

And my major problem with this book is the chapter about hormones which is very brief and on the surface. When doctors or media mention hormones what they are referring is synthetic drugs with devastating effects such as dementia, stroke, heart disease, cancer and etc. On the other hand, bioidentical hormones are identical to the human hormones and prevent chronic disease. The book talks about the benefits of hormone replacement without mentioning it is bioidentical hormones beneficial not the synthetic drugs which are called "hormones" by doctors and drug companies.

To anybody suffering from any chronic disease (Since men and women have the same hormones in their bodies in different amounts), I recommend reading the first part of Women's Hormones by Pamela Smith, MD and watching Dr. Frank Shallenberger's free educational videos on his website called "Managing Your Thyroid and Adrenal Glands. The Secret of Healing Chronic Disease" and "Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement". Dr.Frank Shallenberger's new book about slowing aging and preventing chronic disease, "Bursting With Energy", is also pretty good.

My recommended list of readings:

"Testosterone Syndrome" by Dr Euguene Shippen for women and men over fifty.

"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause" by Dr John Lee for women over thirty and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" for women over fifty years old.

"Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy" by Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield. This is the best book written about thyroid disorders, their relation to other illnesses such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, bio-identical hormone replacement and much more.

About the Author

Prof. Dr. Heinz Mehlhorn, D�sseldorf, Germany. He has investigated the transmission pathways of human and animal parasites for over 40 years and his university spin-off company Alpha-Biocare has developed various antiparasitic medical products based on more than 20 patents. He has published 25 books, more than 250 original papers, and has served as Managing Editor of the journal Parasitology Research since 1981.

Prof. Dr. Kevin SW Tan, Singapore, former fellow at the Rockefeller University. He is a specialist for molecular parasitology research in the fields of Blastocystis hominis and Plasmodium falciparum, and has received various national and international awards as well as considerable research grants for his work to date. More recently, he has funneled the research output of his many publications into the foundation of the company Biolynx Technology.

Prof. Dr. Hisao Yoshikawa, Nara, Japan. He has been an active researcher in many fields of medical and zoological parasitology for over 30 years. Over the course of this time, he has intensively studied the ultrastructure, cell biology and molecular phylogeny of many isolates of Blastocystis.
