Personally I would purchase Lancelot Andrews' Press's Combined Monastic Diurnal Noted rather than this volume, which only contains music for certain offices.

The Monastic Diurnal Noted is the brilliant work of the Reverend Canon Winfred Douglas, the renowned English church musician and pioneer of adapting Gregorian plainchant to English. An Episcopal Priest, he completed this Gregorian Antiphonal in English, containing all the Antiphons, Hymn Tunes, and Responses of the Day Hours of the Benedictine Divine Office (the seven canonical Hours, excluding the midnight office of Matins, this volume allows one to chant the offices using traditional Gregorian chants in accordance with the 1928 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer

This reprint contains the first of two volumes. This first volume includes the music of Vespers, the Little Hours and Lauds of Great Feasts. If one wants the complete set, the second volume includes the music of Sunday and Festive Lauds, with Matins of the Sacred Triduum and Matins of the Dead. There is on the market a volume from Lancelot Press that combines both volumes into one: there is something to be said for combining the offices although it makes for a very thick but hardback book.

With the liturgical reforms of the 1979 Prayerbook, the Sisters of St, Mary have updated and revised their Diurnal to reflect the changes in the Book of Common Prayer. Sadly, this means a loss of much of Douglas' work. However, as one will see on Amazon, there are a number of attempts to save this work for use within churches. Douglas was an outstanding historian of musical chant and a fine composer - his work deserves to be preserved

Keith Hayward has been Nigel Goodall's researcher since they worked together on Elton John: A VisualDocumentary for Omnibus Press. He is a renowned Elton John collector, expert and historian. He has met Elton on several occasions

Today, Elton would probably describe the audition to the Royal Academy of Music as a daunting proposition for any eleven-year-old to go through, but after showing what he was capable of when it came to playing the piano, an oral test, and convincing his auditioners that he had an ear for music, he was accepted into the Academy, and as far as he was concerned, he was now on the first rung of the ladder to becoming a professional musician.
Helen Piena, his piano tutor at the Academy, recalls that he was offered a Junior Exhibitionist Scholarship even though he couldn't read music, not even a note. He was chosen, says Piena, because he had such a good ear. She taught him the rudiments of playing the piano but not composition, 'I didn't teach him for composition. He had lessons with a composer for that, but I don't know how he was doing in his other classes at the time. I know his compositions were, and still are, classically based, and that was due to his education at the Academy; he learned a lot about music structure whilst he was there.'
As well as practising the piano, he was also in Harmony classes in Room 114. 'I came to the Royal Academy as a junior Saturday morning student in the early sixties,' recalls Skaila Kanga, a fellow student, and a then would-be principal harp player on Elton's second album. 'He used to always sit at the back, out of the way. We were keen and eager, sitting at the front and swotting, but Reg wasn't like that, he was shy and hid away in this very big room, by the window. He remembers me in that class but I don't have a huge amount of recollection of him because he was so very shy. It was quite a tussle for him. He had such a different way of listening to music, and was playing piano mostly by ear, which was, and still is, his incredible skill but which the Academy didn't really engender in those days. It was a much more classical training, and for those students who wanted to go down the classical path, it was invaluable.'
Certainly, he didn't seem to be comfortable doing Mozart and Haydn, continues Kanga. 'And so, therefore, the stricture and all the classes that we had were hard for him.' What he could do, however, was play and improvise on what he could remember, which is a phenomenal thing to do, and vital for the route into rock 'n' roll music.

Elton John must read

I couldn't put this book down. Mr. Hayward has painstakingly researched and interviewed those persons closely involved in the music publishing era of the 60's where a young Reg Dwight would sharpen his craft and begin his rise to super stardom. This book separates the gossip from the fact, and makes sense of a period of time that little is known about. Full of little known factoids, dates, persons and places. A book that needed to be written.

1960s Denmark Street comes alive in Hayward's book!

I want to heartily endorse Keith Hayward's book, "Tin Pan Alley." I'm nearly done reading it, and if you are not only an Elton John fan, but also a fan of music in general, this is a must read. Keith has not only encapsulated the start of Elton and Bernie, but even more has captured an era in music history that will never exist again. His work chronicling the music business scene on Denmark Street, particularly during the 1960s, and how Elton's rise to prominence was inextricably linked to that magical place and time is just astounding in its detail and description. Keith's interviews and research almost plunks you right in the street. You can smell the coffee at the cafes and hear the clamor inside the offices of the publishing companies. You can see the Kinks, Stones, Beatles and Reg Dwight and his companions going in and out of the buildings. You get what it was like to be a struggling group, such as Bluesology, and understand the machinations that led Reg/Elton and Bernie to the music they would start out writing and later the different style of songs they would end up recording. Caleb's insights are particularly noteworthy. Folks, this isn't a glorification book about Elton John. It's a frank, honest look at the state of music in England during one of its most creative and evolutionary periods. Whole chunks of pages go by without any mention of Elton or Bernie whatsoever, but that's as it should be. Hayward has a lot of history to impart, and doesn't flinch or take the easy way out. He put a lot of work into this book and it shows. I for one will never listen to "Bitter Fingers" the same again having read his book. "Those old diehards in Denmark Street start laughing at the keyboard player's hollow, haunted eyes." Wow, it takes on a whole new meaning now. If you haven't already, buy a copy of it today. I can hardly wait for his followup to be released!

Upclose and personal account of British music scene and EJ's role in it, though could benefit from some tighter editing

This book brings together new information from dozens of people involved in the British music business of the 1960's, all of whom, in one way or another, were involved in the rise of Elton John. The book ends in Summer 1970, when Elton came to the US for the first time, and had his breakthrough performance for the fans in... Philadelphia.
This book is about "Tin Pan Alley": it includes in depth introduction to the British music publishing business and its evolution into a recorded music production business. The focus is on Dick James Music. We learn how Reg Dwight found a role in that business.
This book is about "The Rise of Elton John": it gives the most extensive coverage of Reg's development as a musician, songwriter, performer, and recording artist ever published. A particular strength is the coverage of Reg's time with Bluesology; this section of the book is loaded with new details--Mick Inkpen provided a trove of memories and impressions.
Virtually every living person who worked with Elton (aside from Bernie Taupin and Nigel Olsson) from the early 60s through 1970 has input. The emphasis is on the music throughout--and it is fascinating to have all the various early musical efforts of Elton documented in one place.
The book would have benefited from a bit more editing; at times, the timeline is not exactly clear. But, this is a small quibble. A more extensive index, with a list of every song mentioned in the text, is needed--this is a serious omission for a book that, in every way, gives wonderful insight into the early career of Elton John.
Keith Hayward's session at the 2013 Elton Expo in Las Vegas was an absolute highlight of the event. Hayward is a passionate music fan, a dogged researcher and has a distinctive "voice" in his prose.
A "must read" for anyone interested in Elton John and particularly those years leading up to his breakthrough success in 1970.

This was a new author for me, and I think the first MM book by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect but I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed reading Jason and Michel's story. The storyline was well thought out and very detailed and there was a lot going on with several other characters as well.

I don't think that it ended abruptly as another reviewer stated but it definitely left things open to expand on this world with many other characters. Jason and Michel also had their HEA so that made me very happy!

I look forward to the next book in the series 'Cougars Cry' with Jason's brother Jared and his cougar mate Logan due out on February 4th at Bookstrand. I'm not sure that I will be able to wait for the extra month that it usually takes to hit Amazon to purchase the book so I will be purchasing it on bookstrand.com.

A Dragon's Dream

Way better than I thought it would be. Jason's dad, mom and sister are real pieces of work, especially the dad. His brother, Jared, started off that way, but I imagine his story will show him learning a few things. His younger brother, Jacob, was wonderful and I'm glad he and his mate moved to the lake.

Michel and Jason are super hot together, but more than that, they're really good for each other. It was nice to see Jason work through some of his insecurities and issues.

Great New Series.

I really liked this book. My only complaint that is left many unanswered questions and basically just abruptly ended. I wouldn't call it a cliff hanger per se, it just ended from one sentence to another. I wouldn't let that deter you from reading this book though. It was really good and I am really hoping for part two.

McCullough's life of Harry Truman is a Sandburg's Lincoln for the 1990s. Biographer of Theodore Roosevelt, historian of the Johnstown flood, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Panama Canal, clearly McCullough found not just a new subject but a hero too when he began research in 1982. As with Roosevelt in Mornings on Horseback ( LJ 5/15/81), he is concerned above all with defining Truman's character. With poetry and reverence he writes of the farmer, haberdasher, and local official whom accident and ambition raised to unprecedented power, yet who left the White House an American everyman. Skeptics uneasy with McCullough's Truman in mystic communion with America's spirit will recall the raw politics described by Richard Miller in Truman: The Rise to Power ( LJ 12/85). For detailed treatment of policy, scholars will often need a specialized monograph. Yet McCullough's Truman is not quite a saint, and his own scholarship is exhaustive in portraying Truman the man. Fabulous!

I have read many of David McCullough's books, only two more to go, but this one was the absolute best. He brought Truman to life for me. He made that whole era, WW! into the Korean War come alive. Every character, every scene, was like I knew exactly what he was talking about. His love of Bess and then his daughter...his protection of the privacy of his family....his loyalty...this was the best read for me and, believe me, I loved The Great Bridge and the story of the Panama Canal...Path Between the Seas....but Truman was so very special. If you have a love of history you will enjoy this book from beginning to end and don't let the length of it discourage you from starting it because it just flies by. When I finished it I felt that I had laid to rest my very best friend. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Harry Truman’s Victory Lap

I’ve been on a big presidential kick lately with the 2016 Presidential Election around a month away. So with that in mind, I will offer my thoughts on Truman. On the positive, I think he did a magnificent job covering Harry Truman as far as giving the reader the broad experience of his life before, during, and after the presidency. For my money, you can’t get any better than the sections on the events leading up to the firing of Douglas Macarthur and his defeat of Thomas Dewey in 1948.

I felt like while it was a well-written biography that kept me engaged through 1000 pages, I felt like it reinforced the popular image of Harry Truman as a plain spoken man of principles who knew how to make the tough decisions and made them. While there is certainly nothing wrong with it, it felt like anything that didn’t compete was glossed over like his association with the Pendergast Machine in Missouri or the depth of his feelings for FDR, I thought this could’ve added a little more depth because many people already understand the popular perception of Harry Truman.

Well written, but largely reinforcing the “popular” image of Harry Truman.

Midwestern Statesman

Truman is the best audio book by David McCullough that I have listened to so far. The narrator was the author. I picked this one because I really did not know very much about Truman except for his morning constitutionals and seeing the picture of him holding up the newspaper that said that Dewey had won.

Coming from the Midwest, I was impressed that he was so humble and actually self-deprecating. This may be a regional trait. I tended to be the same way until I had to learn not to be for job interviews. His world opened up for him when he first got his glasses, he share that experience with Teddy Roosevelt. Another Midwestern trait was to be a reader, he and his friend read a whole public library. That warms my heart as I did too although, I did skip all the math and business books. He had good grades and good manners and worked as a bank teller until he was called home by his father to work the family farm. I also got the message that his actions were more statesman than politician which makes me extremely happy.

What I liked best about this audio book was that actual recordings of his famous speeches were included. That made the story seem more real. Also it ended with a recording of Truman playing the Black Hawk Waltz on the piano.

I cannot form my total opinion of him yet except that he was a fine Midwesterner. I think the story stayed away from negative criticism so I plan to read more about it. So this portrayal was mostly positive.

Hot, Sexy, Enchanting and Romantic!

This story really pulled at my heart strings...Yes, it was hot, sexy and erotic; but there was so much tenderness and romance in the story. Not just in bed, but between the characters. The story and the characters pulled me in and after 3 prior Novellas, I have come to know the characters well and love them.

I recommend reading the entire series...a bit bummed that it is over, but it ended so wonderfully.

Now that I have all 4 Novellas on my kindle, I plan to read them in succession.

A great book for presenting trz. mets and orgn. metallics...

Very well written, though some more practice problems would be useful (not to mention a solutions manual...) THe book presents 18 electorn complexes and the like very well and gives many journals as back up references... Gives a great summary of organometallic reactions (CO insertion, Associative, Dissociative, etc) and a really solid and historically grounded intro to the field of catalysis... Clearly written, for the most part, but one section on the Trans effect is a bit ambigous, in the sense that they never really talk about HOW to use it... Sure they mention the idea, but they never address the leaving group... People always confused on that section... So that is my gripe in this otherwise excellent book...

This book is a wonderfully simple guide to organometallic chemistry. It is very easy to read making it a quick reference for inquiries. I would highly recommend this book to any beginning organometallic student.

decent, not the best

This book is decently written. the first several chapters provide a background introduction into molecular orbital theory with subsequent chapters introducing various ligands and their behaviors in complexes, then reactions and catalytic cycles. unlike other chemistry books i own this one sources the original journal articles of some principal reactions used as examples- which can be helpful for those interested in looking up the original data. one complaint i have is that the book does not provide many examples of types of reactions, nor does it explain the exceptions to rules and why.
