A good introductory text to industrial polymers

Good introduction. Covers chemistry of polymerization (step growth, free radical, ionic). Amorphous, semi-crystalline and elastomeric polymers. Covers mechanical properties in terms of viscoelastic behaviour. This book could be very useful to non-chemists requiring a brief readable introduction to, or overview of, polymer chemistry. Does not assume high level of prior knowledge in chemistry or calculus. Does also not provide much specific physical or mechanical data of commercial polymers.

About the Author
David Money Harris is an associate professor of engineering at Harvey Mudd College. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University and his M.Eng. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. Before attending Stanford, he worked at Intel as a logic and circuit designer on the Itanium and Pentium II processors. Since then, he has consulted at Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, Evans & Sutherland, and other design companies.

David’s passions include teaching, building chips, and exploring the outdoors. When he is not at work, he can usually be found hiking, mountaineering, or rock climbing. He particularly enjoys hiking with his son, Abraham, who was born at the start of this book project. David holds about a dozen patents and is the author of three other textbooks on chip design, as well as two guidebooks to the Southern California mountains.

Sarah L. Harris is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. Before attending Stanford, she received a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Brigham Young University. Sarah has also worked with Hewlett-Packard, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Nvidia, and Microsoft Research in Beijing.
Sarah loves teaching, exploring and developing new technologies, traveling, wind surfing, rock climbing, and playing the guitar. Her recent exploits include researching sketching interfaces for digital circuit design, acting as a science correspondent for a National Public Radio affiliate, and learning how to kite surf. She speaks four languages and looks forward to learning more in the near future.

Clear, easy to understand+ real world examples + interview questions

The authors have written a book that is very clear an easy to understand. The exercises are well-designed and the real-world examples are a nice touch. The lengthy explanations often found in other textbooks are not seen here. Interestingly it has interview questions too, which are not seen in other books. It's obvious that the authors have devoted a great deal of time and effort to create an accessible text. One of the authors, David Harris, had been working in chip design industries which is a great help to this book (David Harris has another book: CMOS VLSI Design, one of the main textbooks for chip design). I have used "Digital Logic and Computer Architecture" book to teach in our university, I strongly recommend this book.

Great introduction to the subject

I am just starting to learn how to program FPGAs and have read several books in the pursuit of this endeavor. This book has been the best I have read so far as a beginner. The authors are very experienced and knowledgeable and it comes through in this book. While other books on this topic appear to have been rushed, poorly edited, and are full of typographical and drawing errors, there were few errors that I noticed in this book. It's two chapters on combinational and sequential logic weren't only good introductions to the topic, they also gave good explanations of the pitfalls that can be encountered with each and how to avoid them. I found the book also did a good job of mixing the right amount of theory with practical applications. I also like that the book covered both VHDL and Verilog and always showed HDL listings side by side for each of the two. It is a great way to learn the second HDL since the side by side listings sort of act like a Rosetta stone of HDLs. The explanation of how to implement the beginnings of a MIPS processor was a great practical application for things learned previously in the book. If I had one wish, it would have been that the accompanying website had a more complete MIPS implementation. When I read the description of the book, I had assumed that the MIPS core described would be more complete. However, what they do cover is a great overview and it implements at least one instruction of each MIPS instruction type so it is a great starting point for a reader to build a more fully functional MIPS implementation.

Easy to learn from and a great reference

I used this book in my introductory computer engineering class. Whenever I was confused after lecture, reading the book cleared up a lot of my questions. In fact, it is written so clearly that I think anyone could teach themselves the subject by reading the book. Even in my more advanced classes, I find myself coming back to this book to brush up on Verilog, timing constraints, and other fundamental topics. Also, I have used this book to prepare for many (successful) interviews since it highlights material that interviewers like to ask. Because it is such a great book to learn from and a good reference for many topics, I recommend this book for electrical engineering or computer science students and anyone else who wants to learn about the subject.

Stanley Rosen received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical enginering from the University of Buffalo.He then was employed as Chief Engineer at Tronomatic Corporation where he designed and build many types of thermoforming machinery, molds, dies, and large, heat-assisted, die-cutting presses.This was during the dawn of thermoforming, where he met and worked with some of the pioneers of the industry.

Rosen was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Society of Plastics Engineers Thermoforming Division, and has been honored as Thermoformer of the Year. Presently, he is consulting and writing on topics related to thermoforming.

About the Author
Master Yin-shun's life was dedicated to Buddhism. He was born in 1906 and became a Buddhist monk in 1930. During his lifetime, he wrote over seven million words in over forty books. Being a student of Master Taixu (1890-1947), he expanded the teaching of ""Human-oriented Buddhism"" (Renjian Fojiao). In 1973, he received a PhD from Taisho University of Japan based on his work on Zhongguo Chanzong shi (The History of Chinese Chan Buddhism). He became the first Chinese Buddhist monk to receive a PhD. He passed away in 2005.

Dr. Wing H. Yeung is a retired psychiarist based in Hawaii where he continues his dharma translation efforts. He formerly practiced in the San Francisco area, and was a cofounder of the Center for Compassionate Living. He graduated from the University of Hawaii's school of medicine in 1977.

Foundational Buddhism

This is one of the very best books on Buddhism in English. When it comes to East Asian Buddhism, most of the books in English present a watered down Buddhism that mystifies more than it illuminates. This book, on the other hand, represents years of meticulous study and practice, and provides a really solid grounding for understanding the fundamentals of the Mahayana tradition as it developed in East Asia. Master Yinshun was concerned with finding the common ground between the various practices and sects that emerged (Pure Land, Chan, Tiantai, etc.) and showing how these different teachings, whose proponents were sometimes at odds with each other, can be harmonized. In this, Yinshun not only re-asserted the fundamentals of Buddhist tradition, but brought new insights into how the philosophical systems- madhyamaka, yogacara, tathagatagarbha- can be integrated. The book is systematic- there's no major Mahayana idea that isn't discussed; at the same time it's easy to read. While its comprehensiveness might bewilder newcomers, it would make a fine second book.

A thorough detailed overview of Buddhisms essence

Venerable Master Yinshun has read the entire Tripitaka three times (all of the Buddhist Sutras, Vinayas, and Sastras). He details in this book all of the essential points, drawing from all of the different schools, methodologies, history and his vast knowledge of the Buddha's teachings. This book is used in the Buddhist schools as standard reading though out the world.

If you want to understand the true meaning of Buddhism, this is a book to read. Most colleges and universities that have Buddhism courses are only teaching the Western stereotype of what they think Buddhism is and is incorrect.

An excellent, comprehensive look at Mahayana Buddhism

Ven. Yin-Shun is not known widely in the West, but was deeply respectful across the Buddhist tradition for his excellent scholarship, and comprehensive approach to Buddhism. His particular style, which he dubbed "Humanistic Buddhism" took a rational approach to Buddhism, but remained deeply rooted in the traditions and texts from which it emerged.

This book provides a very comprehensive look at Mahayana, or East Asian, Buddhism. The author begins with the foundations of Buddhism, common to all Buddhist sects (Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, Five Moral Precepts, etc) and gradually works his way into Mahayana Buddhism in particular, then ultimately reaches the teachings of the Bodhisattva Path. The book has a very clear flow throughout.

The detail and depth of research is unprecedented as well, as he covers practically every topic in Buddhism from meditation, chanting, devotion, tantra, Bodhisattvas, Buddhas and so on. This is a book worth referring to over and over again just because so much can be found in this one book. Some Buddhist texts haven't been widely translated into English either, so there's a lot of hidden gems not normally found in Western books.

Also, Ven. Yin-Shun, being a respected Chan Buddhist himself, speaks from experience. The book does not contain anecdotes, but he does speak on current trends in Buddhism, and also explains carefully the various types of meditation, and how to go about practicing them (again, relying on extensive Buddhist texts).

This is a challenging book to read just because of its size and depth, and Ven. Yin-Shun is actually writing for a Chinese, not Western audience, but if you're familiar with Buddhism and want more depth and understanding, this definitely should be your next purchase.

Horribly boring, using it for class right now. Not even a textbook, just a collection of lackluster stories written by scientists and ecologists from wayy long ago. Really makes this class even more treacherous to get through.

About the Author

Emily Finch, Senior Lecturer in Law, University of Surrey,Stefan Fafinski, Associate in Law, University of Surrey

Emily Finch is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey where her teaching focuses on criminal law and student skills. She is Professor of Research at the University of Winchester. Her overarching research interest is in public perceptions of crime and criminality and the impact of technology on criminal activity. She has a particular interest in jury decision-making and has conducted a number of empirical studies that explore factors that influence jury verdicts in rape, theft and fraud trials. Her work on identity theft won the Joseph Lister Award in 2005.

Stefan Fafinski is an Associate in Law at the University of Surrey and a Research Associate at the University of Oxford. He is currently teaching Criminal Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Cyberlaw and Cybercrime. He is interested in the social factors that influence the misuse of information technology and the challenges that networked technologies present in general. He won the Joseph Lister Award for his work on the social aspects of computer crime in 2006.
