In an effective opening double-page scene, a young man and woman reach up toward an elephant and a giraffe, all of them standing next to the tail end of the whale, demonstrating its enormous size. Davies offers simple, lively descriptions of the blue whale's body, eating habits, child care, migration, and means of communication. "Yet, the blue whale may not be as lonely as it seems. Because sometimes it makes a hum?a hum so loud and so low that it can travel for thousands of miles through the seas to reach other blue whales." Maland's cross-hatched pen-and-ink drawings, washed in soft tones of blue, gray, aqua, and orange, sometimes appear as smaller, blocked scenes, but more often they fill the double-page spreads with bits of caption gracefully curving around related picture elements. A simple index appears at the front of the book, doubling as a table of contents. Some libraries may assign this to the picture-book shelves, where it will be read as a true-life story, but it will serve equally well as nonfiction. Conversational text and soft, crosshatched pen-and-ink illustrations ebb and flow in a fluid look at the largest mammal ever to inhabit the earth. Invoking the senses, Davies describes the blue whale's physical attributes in irresistible, crystalline terms. Its skin is ``springy and smooth like a hard-boiled egg, and it's as slippery as wet soap.'' The enormity of the blue whale comes into focus in the illustrations that place it next to a giraffe and an elephant, bringing it into the everyday realm of children. The scale of this leviathan becomes even clearer when Davies notes that its eyes are the size of teacups and its ears are no larger than the end of a pencil. She covers its yearly migration, and its diet of 30 million tiny krill in just a day. Undulating bold text provides auxiliary facts that complement the main story. Effective use of shrinking and expanding typeface and the inclusion of two human observers accentuate the proportional vastness of both the creature and its ocean. This book is a delight to read out loud to children, the illutrations are excellent and the information that is given is also educational. I would reccomend this book for lower primary use, it could even be used for middle primary use to start of a unit of work on Whales. It is also excellent for just reading to your children at home, or as independant reading material.

To be read and re-read

This book must be on the shelf of every serious freediver. In order to be successful in freediving one must focus on efficiency. This book provides a vast amount of information to help one become more efficient. Every move you make or don't make underwater will effect your bottom time and have an impact on how safe your dive is. Manual of Freediving goes into great detail teaching proper finning technique, a critical chapter since it is finning which most heavily influences your oxygen usage. There is information which at first might seem over explained. Manual of Freediving is though a textbook and a reference book. It is not a story. It is not specifically designed to entertain but rather to educate. The details about our physiology might seem at first ponderous but as you advance in the sport and begin to scrutinize every aspect to progress you will find yourself returning to those chapters. This is a fabulous reference book. Five stars all the way.

Right on!

I love this book!! I've thought about trying free diving for a long time. I used to be a very competitive synchronized swimmer and have done just about every other water sport, including SCUBA. I didn't want to start with expensive lessons to understand the sport. This book is exactly what I was looking for!! It starts with a fascinating history of the sport, goes into pretty good detail of the physiology involved so you understand what your doing, techniques, and training suggestions. This book is the perfect stepping stone to guide me into my new sport!! If you're interested in free diving, get this book!!

Now, as Im sure youve read in all the other reviews, this is an instructional book!!! Not meant to entertain. Now, that being said, this book is simply incredible. It goes over every aspect of freediving, very well explained, and more thorough than you can imagine. Absolutely a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the sport.

A good beginning for the study of health

I am studying to be a certified nutritionist and this is the textbook for my first class. I have found this book to be very thorough, yet consise and to the point. The information is pertinent and up-to-date. The authors take a holistic approach and the book covers diet, healthy lifestyle choices, emotional health and well being, as well as important information on body functions. It isn't overly technical (which is nice for a beginner) but provides enough detail. I recommend it as an introduction to learning about nutrition or health.

good YA contemporary story dealing with addiction

For 18-year-old Imogen (Genna), basketball is everything. She's destined for a scholarship to college to play basketball, and things are even looking up with Jake, a boy who she has had a major crush on forever.

When Genna is injured during a basketball game, all her plans are dust when she is told that she will never be able to play professional basketball again.

With Vicodin the only thing keeping her going, and her mother more and more absent from her life, Genna feels like her life is on a downward spiral.
Can Genna learn to cope without the Vicodin? Should she still be with Jake? What is her mother up to? And what will happen to Genna now she can't play basketball?

This was a good YA contemporary story, and I liked how normal Genna was.

Genna was a great character. She was just so normal! Totally the sort of person that you would be friends with and go to school with, and what happened to her just sucked. I really felt for her when she realised that her career was over, and the way that she became hooked on Vicodin, without even realising it showed how dangerously addictive narcotics are, even to your average everyday person.

I liked the storyline in this book, and I liked how well the book flowed. I felt really sorry for what Genna was going through, and at the same time understood her addiction and how she ended up where she was. I did see some parts of the storyline coming, but this didn't really spoil the story at all.
I thought the drug addiction part of the story was done really well, especially as Genna felt like a normal person, and didn't come across the way you would expect an addict to come across. I also liked how the legal problems of Genna's addiction were also dealt with.

I liked the romance between Genna and Jake, although that wasn't really the main focus of the story. I thought that there could possibly have been a bit more romance, but the story was fine as it was really. If you're looking for a romance novel, this isn't really it though, this focuses more on Genna's problem with drugs.

I liked the ending of the book, and I liked how things worked out okay for Genna in the end, and we got as much of a happy ending as we could in the situation!
Overall; a good YA contemporary story dealing with addiction.

Not Strictly Romance Driven

The thing I loved best about this story is that it did not focus on romance like so many stories do these days. this focused on Genna's struggle as she sees her entire life change in an instant. It was nice following her along her journey and it was easy to do so. I do wish there was more focus on how she felt while taking Vicodin since that is a part of being addicted. It only barely touches on how it makes it easier for her to deal with things, not much more. As well, I wish there was more about the withdrawal process.

Genna is a basketball player that has a chance for a scholarship to play in college. At one of the biggest games in her career, she gets injured really bad. As a result she will never be able to competitively play basketball again. As a result, she has an identity crisis since that's what she's been doing her entire life. At the same time, there is of course family and friend drama. I liked Genna. While she falls into the same traps most girls do, with needed a boy to be happy, she eventually "womans" up and get strong again. She is definitely a fighter which is good to see, especially with a situation as tough as overcoming drug addiction.

Her friends, including Jake, really stick by her despite all her dumb moments. That's definitely a sign of good friends. Normally there's at least one side character I just don't like, but I actually really liked all of them. I was rooting for all of them to get what they wanted. Even Genna's family was pretty helpful with everything, especially her father. It was a great supporting cast all around.

Overall it was really good. I do wish there was more-about the addiction itself and of course the recovery process. I would say this would be great for teenagers to read simply because it's a valid look at what many may be facing these days-with drugs becoming more and more present in society. I really enjoyed this despite its (minor) downfalls and I look forward to more by the author.

Powerful read about drug addiction

Imogen (Genna) Pierce has trained her whole life to play basketball in college. It's her mother's dream as well as her own. Now she's a senior in high school, the team captain, and has a chance of winning the state tourney. University scouts are inviting her to visit colleges, and she's now dating the football quaterback on whom she's had a crush for years. However, during an important match, she has a bad accident and can no longer play.

Genna is broken and defeated; she doesn't know who she is anymore, if she can't play basketball. Her parents keep fighting, and her mother buries herself into work. Genna also can't understand why Jake would still want to be with her. Frantic to make the pain stop, she turns to Vicodin.

I read Sidelined in one sitting. It sucked me in and I had to know how it ended. It also broke my heart. It's the story of a girl who gets addicted to medicinals and does whatever she can to get her next dose. At first she's doing it unconsciously; the pills help her relax and forget about her dailyu troubles. Then she can't control it any longer. It's a vicious addiction , even more so because Genna denies, at first, that she has a problem. Her boyfriend tries to help, but she pushes him away.

With Genna's dad, things go better; he's always been the more accomodating parent. But when he's the only one left to take care of Genna, things get strained.

The romance subplot is also present. I loved Jake; he was a sweet, supporting boyfriend. The love story was nice to read.

Henry James (1843-1916), American novelist and critic, was an innovator in technique and a distinctive prose stylist. More than any previous writer, James refined the technique of narrating a novel from the point of view of a character, thereby laying the foundations of modern stream-of-consciousness fiction. I have no regrets about having ordered this "book," thinking it an unfinished novel, but others might be well notified that it's only a short story, "The Middle Years," from an unfinished volume to have carried the same name. At least this is what I've been able to discover from glancing online references.
The best James is beyond price, and at $12.00 this was worth it to me, a semi-autobiographical sketch of an author at the end of his life, full of insights into the subjective mind of the author and containing perhaps the most widely quoted and passionate definition of art in our culture. But others may want to know in advance: this is a short story of a mere 20 pages, and not even the eponymous unfinished volume, which included other stories as well.

About the Author
Stephen Birmingham (1929–2015) was an American author of more than thirty books. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he graduated from Williams College in 1953 and taught writing at the University of Cincinnati. Birmingham’s work focuses on the upper class in America. He’s written about the African American elite in Certain People and prominent Jewish society in Our Crowd: The Great Jewish Families of New York, The Grandees: The Story of America’s Sephardic Elite, and The Rest of Us: The Rise of America’s Eastern European Jews. His work also encompasses several novels including The Auerbach Will, The LeBaron Secret, Shades of Fortune, and The Rothman Scandal, and other non-fiction titles such as California Rich, The Grandes Dames, and Life at the Dakota: New York’s Most Unusual Address.

Stephen Birmingham's insightful look at one of New York City's most memorable addresses will be an enjoyment to all who find great interest in the details in the history of this wonderful city. The book studies the story of this well-known landmark from the very beginning; by understanding the background of key figures like Edward Clark (founder of the Singer Co.) and architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (designer of the old Waldorf-Astoria and The Plaza Hotel).
In an era where `polished society' observed presentation and `location' as signs of refiness, the Dakota was one of the first experiments in `modern' urban living in the United States. Wealthy upper class New Yorkers were presented with a new and less costly option in `elegant' living to the grand homes rising in late 1800s Fifth Avenue. Although initially frowned upon by the `Old Guard' of New York society, the Dakota instantly found it's market and was one of the pioneers in this now `acceptable' style of living.
Throughout the years the Dakota apartments has found a vast array of `celebrity tenants'. Individuals who have always been out of the `mainstream' and have put little thought on which side of Central Park they resided. Boris Karloff, Zachary Scott, Leonard Bernstein, Lauren Bacall, Roberta Flack, John Lennon and Yoko Ono have been a few of the tenants that have called this historically rich building their home.
Stephen Birmingham chronicles the first hundred years of `One 72nd Street West', capturing along the way the growth and changing trends of this vast Metropolis. Readers will also discover that by the end of this witty and insightful book the building itself gains a feisty personality of its own; by being the one that dared being `too far up' and on the wrong side of town.

More than "John Lennon's apartment building"

A wonderfully entertaining book that chronicles the history of one of New York City's most colorful residences. The early chapters are particularly enjoyable, with tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the (often ludicrous) rituals of high society during the Gilded Age. The last quarter of the book is not as interesting, with sometimes overlong discussion of the building's modern-day residents. As a whole, however, "Life at the Dakota" is a vibrant and ingratiating portrait: not just for history buffs and not just for New Yorkers.

Entertaining, if dishy

This was an entertaining social history of the Dakota apartment building in New York. The early parts of the book discusses the early history of the building, its first tenants, & its place in the history of the city & this is where the book is at its most interesting. Who knew that early apartment buildings & hotels were frowned upon because they were so much like the tenements of the day?

The last bit of the book is a bit gossipy, but that's also delicious in its own way, although somewhat disconcerting after the earlier historical writing. There are some cool photographs, as well, but I would've liked to have seen more photos of the interior of the building - maybe not the insides of people's apartments, but surely there's a picture of the lobby somewhere!

I love the notion of this building going up on the west side of Central Park & being called the Dakota because at the time it was so far out west. Its original budget was a million dollars & it took four years to build - from 1880 to 1884.

This, of course, is where John Lennon lived & where he was shot. The exterior of the building has been used in a couple of movies, Rosemary's Baby most notably, but they don't allow filming inside.

This is an enjoyable, if not terribly scholarly, book.

GEORGE CHRISTOU Indiana University, Bloomington I am no doubt representative of a large number of current inorganic chemists in having obtained my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the 1970s. It was during this period that I began my continuing love affair with this subject, and the fact that it happened while I was a student in an organic laboratory is beside the point. I was always enchanted by the more physical aspects of inorganic chemistry; while being captivated from an early stage by the synthetic side, and the measure of creation with a small c that it entails, I nevertheless found the application of various theoretical, spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques to inorganic compounds to be fascinating, stimulating, educational and downright exciting. The various bonding theories, for example, and their use to explain or interpret spectroscopic observations were more or less universally accepted as belonging within the realm of inorganic chemistry, and textbooks of the day had whole sections on bonding theories, magnetism, kinetics, electron-transfer mechanisms and so on. However, things changed, and subsequent inorganic chemistry teaching texts tended to emphasize the more synthetic and descriptive side of the field. There are a number of reasons for this, and they no doubt include the rise of diamagnetic organometallic chemistry as the dominant subdiscipline within inorganic chemistry and its relative narrowness vis-d-vis physical methods required for its prosecution.
