This is the fourth title in the “French Wings” series, describing the history of the LeO 45 from initial specifications to retirement after WWII. The Leo 45 was a modern (by 1940 standards) bomber in the Arme de l’Air (French Air Force), probably the best known of such aircraft. Used during the Phoney War but more importantly employed to try to stop the German onslaught during the Bataille de France. After French armistice, the Vichy Air Force built some planes, most of them captured during invasion of ‘Free Zone’ in November 1942. The Germans used this plane in the transport role, as well as French troops in North Africa when they fought alongside the Allies after Operation Torch. Specifications, construction and operations of these aircraft are described in detail, illustrated with many previously unpublished photos. Color schemes and markings are described and illustrated (Arme de l’Air, Vichy Air Force, Luftwaffe, Arme de l’Air after Torch).

Review
What a riveting read! The copiously illustrated effort features photos, tech-manual excerpts and stunning color profiles. Dust off Heller’s classic kits! Let’s hope “French Wings” eventually offer a similarly superb study on the rival Amiot 350 series! Rabidly recommended! (Cybermodeler)

Best book yet in this series
By Jim Davis
This is the fourth book in MMP's French Wings series. The book is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", 80 page, square bound card cover. This is probably the most ambitious book yet in the series because the subject is the advanced, but ultimately unsuccessful, Liore et Olivier LeO 45.
The book divides into three basic parts. The first part is seven pages long and describes the background, design, and development of the aircraft. The second part is nine pages and is a technical description of the aircraft supported by surviving contemporary technical drawings. The rest of the book is given over to the type's service history. The Battle of France receives the most attention of course but Vichy and post war service is not neglected, the campaign in Syria being a highlight. The text is supported throughout by numerous black and white photographs. There are also 29 pages of color profiles, some including plan views.
Highly recommended. French aircraft of this period are not well covered in English and this series is very welcome on this account. The next volume will cover the Morane Saulnier MS.406. I am looking forward to it.

A Fine Work on a Neglected Subject
By Paul Bradley
The authors have done a fine job in pulling together much information on this neglected subject. The LeO45 was one of the best French bombers of World War II, and certainly the best-looking, but while an effective aircraft, it suffered from delays to service entry and had little impact on the course of events when the Germans invaded France in 1940.
Fernandez and Laureau have put together a nice English-language monograph that covers the development of the type, with a good technical description, and gives comprehensive service and operational histories from 1938 to the 1950s; supported by a nice selection of photographs, the text is very readable.
For the aviation enthusiast and historian, there's lots to enjoy here, while the modeler will be pleased with the technical diagrams and interior photos, with the added bonus of a series of fine full-colour profile illustrations.
All in all, quite possibly the best English-language book on the LeO 45 and a very nice addition to the library of anyone interested in French WWII aircraft.
