Hidden Gem, by Lissa Kasey

Misaki “Aki” Itou is a psi―a person with mutated DNA granting him psychic abilities. He’s also a contracted companion―a whore. It may not be the perfect profession, but having a roof over his head, food to eat, and not being subjected to torture is a dream come true. He is the top companion at the Hidden Gem, and it makes him enough money to buy the prettiest, most sparkly shoes he can find.

Shane McNaughton is an Irishman who survived the Third World War and works as a cop. Head of Missing Persons, he’s good at finding people, but after the plague of the Third mutated his DNA, he has a hard time letting anyone see the monster inside. He’s been paying for Aki’s services for two years, both the psi and the sexual kind, but he wants more from the companion.

Shane needs Aki’s ability to see into another person’s past to track down a serial killer murdering the children of rich and powerful men, but the more they work together, the clearer it becomes that they are linked through a darker past than either of them realizes.

A Stunning and creative thriller.
By Tempeste O'Riley
Aki’s life has been a combination of nightmare, pain, loss, abuse, torture, and oddly, most recently family and maybe even love. He can’t touch people unless he wants to be subjected to their thoughts, pain, and memories. This is kind of a problem since he’s also a companion(whore)—the top paid one in the all of City M, in fact. Being a psi isn’t easy and isn’t something he can hide—their eyes give them away. There are only two exceptions to his touching issues, his best friend, Candy (also a companion) and Paris (a senator who was once a companion at the Hidden Gem just like Aki), not that anyone knows why they can touch him and it not send Aki into convulsions and nightmares.

Detective Shane McNaughton—whom Aki and Candy call the big DM, lol—hasn’t had a great life either. He’s the product of a plague that spread through the ranks of the Northern soldiers at the end of the 3rd World War. He survived, but it changed him. He is now a genetic mutation who must change monthly into his animal form. It’s not tied to the moon and it’s lycanthropy, per se, but it is painful, dangerous, and most don’t survive the first change. He did and that was decades ago.

There’s a serial killer on the loose killing kids and then mutilating them. McNaughton seeks Aki’s help but that comes with a lot of risk to Aki as his powers are never kind to him. All this is intermixed with the two of them trying to deal with the realization of desires, needs, kink, sparkly shoes (Aki has a serious pretty shoe fetish that Shane is more than happy to help feed), Aki’s past coming to light—a past he didn’t remember!—and more.

This is not your simple little story that will be a quick, easy read for a lunch break. It is however a sexy, sensual, read that will have you turning the pages to try to figure out what’s going to happen next, what happened to Aki, who the hell the baddie is, and just where did he come from…. There are so many layers that I reread the book before I reviewed it, not wanting to have missed anything. And yes, I enjoyed it just as much the second time!

As anyone that’s read my books know, I have a thing for food and clothing in my stories… and I just l o v e Aki’s wardrobe and shoe horde. This is not a shelf or even collection, I assure you. I promise, the mention of these trappings and more are in no way extras or fluff. It always adds to the scene and the character in a positive way and often makes you understand them just a little more. I’ve never seen clothing, shoes, and makeup used so skillfully!

Hidden Gem is an incredible thriller, a stunning and creative romance, and a true Lissa Kasey story. I cannot wait to read Cardinal Sins (book 2) and cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The beginning of an incredible series!
By johanna
It is the world after World War III and the consequences of the wars not only mutated the planet, but the very animals, including humans, living on it. As some are unaffected, more are but remain hidden for fear of fear itself. One of those who stays hidden, as a pleasure companion, is Aki Itou.

Aki remembers devastation, torture, violence, and a loss so profound his mind could not comprehend it. His savior is someone who knows that the world they now lived in is very different from the past. These days, power not only comes in the form of money, but in information. Trained by the best, now contracted to the best, Aki is Hidden Gem's top companion everyone sought. But fear met him everywhere he turns for his eyes betrays his mutation. He is a psi.

Shane McNaughton is considered the best in his job. He finds missing persons, dead or alive. His fame often supercedes his talent though and no one really knows how he does it. He is another mutation thanks to the war and he is one of the hidden. His mutation makes him dangerous and it brings with it a loneliness he could only find relief in the presence of Aki. He had been going to the psi for two years now and could never really resist staying away. As a cover up, he requests Aki to help out in his searches. One slip up, however, showed Aki the monster inside and from that time on, he has tried to keep the distance. Then the serial murders of children happened and he was pulled from his office to assist in the search. He knew he needed Aki now more than ever but he also needed to protect the man. He just has to figure out how.

This is one of THE BEST science fiction, dystopic novels I have ever read!

Lissa Kasey has begun, what I could only assume, the first part of a series that is as thrilling and mysterious as it is romantic and mildly erotic. This new world, it is dangerous and it has too many secrets. The world is high on technology but also high on unethical experimentation all in the name of the survival of the human species. The experimentations not only ruins the DNA of men but also brings about more mutations and evolution that could not be comprehended. There is not that much anarchy on the streets as it remains strong within the confines of walls and secret locations.

Caught in the middle is Aki, an anomaly, a mystery and a danger no one could really measure. He is also one of the sweetest men to come across the written page and yes, he is a paid companion and the blurb says a 'whore,' but I don't see him as that. I see him as a necessity to a world that is not like ours and acts more like a geisha - one who could play host and provide relief to those who need it without being crass about it. Why he is at the center of the violence of a serial killer has to be read and carefully.

Shane is an alpha-male and very protective of his Aki. His relationship with the man is hesitant for he does not wish to reveal his monster but he knows without Aki he could not find the killer. When their relationship turns to the more romantic and places Aki in danger, his flaws show but his determination to change and be that person who could protect and love Aki made him come out the hero.

The supporting cast of characters are quite a number and I cannot wait to read what next happens to them for their lives all gravitate towards Aki who is revealed to be something more than what we readers assume.

This is a tale that is not only intriguing in its mysteries but in the way the plot develops to the unexpected without going overboard.

The beginning of an incredible series I wouldn't want to miss out on for both the unexpected twists and turns in the plot and a romance that is far from the usual.

Finally: a shout out to the artist Siobhan. That cover says it all.

Stunned.
By Patricia Nelson
I can only say that Lissa Kasey has written THE best dystopian book I've ever read. I was completely blown away by the complex, gripping, gritty, and compelling world she built, and my emotions ran from anger, to disgust, to hope, to……you name it, I felt it. Some may love it, some may hate it, but this is one book that will stay with you (especially me) for a long, long time. I bought this fantastic tale, and I can't wait to get the next one.
